Deco Features: Kork Wine and Cheese
Archived Reports:
Back in the early 60's when nuclear missiles were 90 miles away in Cuba, building a bomb shelter wasn't a bad idea. They were made to keep you alive and not exactly places to party.
That was then, this is now at Kork Wine and Cheese in Downtown Miami, you can get bombed in a real bomb shelter.
JESSIE ALLEN: "There's nowhere like this in Miami so it was kinda cool place where you could go underground you could be away from the world i mean you wouldn't even know what time it is right now."
The joint has a retail history as well.
JESSIE ALLEN: "The owner will edwards found this place it actually used to be the burdines so if you're upstairs you'll see a lot of the old pieces of burdines."
The shelter obviously needed a major facelift before it was game-ready, but a few tidbits still remain.
JESSIE ALLEN: "The only parts that are left are this wall behind me and a few little knick knacks here, and there the ceiling so we tried to keep a lot of you know its originality of how it was before but we made it nice and friendly and up to date."
Jessie would like to break down the Kork Wine and Cheese experience for you.
JESSIE ALLEN: "You come in to kork and you talk to your server or bartender and they can either serve you a glass of wine or a glass of our craft beer or you could go to our cheese monger who will tell you all about the cheeses. We have the meats we have and you can make any of those into a sandwich."
The basement is yours whenever the mood to head underground hits you.
JESSIE ALLEN: "The cellar is open all the time to be used to just sit in and have a drink or eat your lunch or your dinner anything you'd like here."
That includes picking out your own bottle of choice from their extensive wine selection and bringing it home in the end, there's no better place to while away the hours should missiles begin to fall.
JESSIE ALLEN: "People love the fact that it's a bomb shelter no one is actually scared because we're actually pretty safe here so if a bomb does drop we can just drink all night and see what happens in the morning."
