The new movie "Alex Cross" is full of stars, but some don't look how you're used to seeing them, you'd never know one is famous for being a loud mouthed grandmother in her 70's and another is famous for being a doctor who spent a lot of time lost on an island.
In "Alex Cross," Tyler Perry plays a gun toting, butt kicking criminal profiler and Matthew Fox is a lean, mean, tattooed sociopath.
They're a far cry from the roles that made them famous madea for Tyler and Dr. Jack Shephard for Matthew, but don't type cast 'em.
TYLER PERRY: "I started reading it and I realized the description James Patterson had and the physicality of alex cross was me. he was describing me."
The Alex Cross books are one of author James Patterson's most popular series, which meant the actors needed to everything they could to bring what's in the books to the big screen.
TYLER PERRY: "I spent time with cold case homicide detectives. I knocked on doors w. them to talk to witnesses. I looked at crime scene photos. I spent time with criminal profiles it was all intriguing stuff -fascinating. to see it in real life."
It wasn't just brains he worked on brawn too. Thee guy lost 30 pounds!
TYLER PERRY: "I worked out twice a day-doing my work outs in the morning and doing Krav Maga, which is an Israeli fighting technique in the afternoon and I was so intense the Krav Maga was so intense I kept it up because I really loved it."
Matthew was all in he learned what made his character, picasso tick
MATTHEW FOX: "For a role like this anytime you learn these things that this guy is going to be really adept at. it puts you closer to where you want to get with him."
First up the look he had a request for producers.
MATTHEW FOX: "I need a guy who is going to help me loose a whole bunch of weight because I think this guy needs to look disturbing and shredded down."
Next training with a MMA fighter
MATTHEW FOX: "That stuff is really fun for me."
The hard work paid off just ask Ed Burns he's Tommy Kane, Alex's partner on the Detroit pd
ED BURNS: "Quite honestly I didnt know how far he had transformed himself until I saw the finished film."
Rachel Nichols A-K-A Monica Ashe rounds out Alex's crime fighting trio for her ... Matthew became Picasso.
RACHEL NICHOLS: "I was not expecting what I saw on screen when I saw the movie-when I comes into the ring, and he says if you hit me in the face you'll never compete again. And he just goes to work on this guy in that moment I understood where he'd gone and what he had to do mentally and physically to do this role."
