I had a good therapy session today and "The Sessions" is a great movie. Doesn't get much better than that. Matter of fact, it's one of my favorite movies of the year and I luv my therapist, too yes, the movie is all about sex but, not in the way you may think. Oscar winning actress Helen Hunt, who stars in the film, told me why.
Being a virgin in the movies isn't so unusual unless, you're say, john hawkes who stars in the sesssions.
He plays a handicapped 38-year-old. Who wants to have sex for the very first time.
Shireen: "We love sex in Miami. We're always half naked."
Enter Helen Hunt - who plays a sex surrogate.
Shireen: "Did you know what a sex surrogate was?"
A sex surrogate trys to fulfill ones desires in a medical slash clinical way.
Shireen: "I loved the movie, I was blown away by it, and i hate everything."
HELEN HUNT: "I hate everything too!"
Shireen: "You do?"
HELEN HUNT: "That's really great."
Shireen: "We're fast friends."
So, said man, buys six sessions, with the surrogate to have a sexual experience.
Helen gets naked a lot.
Shireen: "You made it look very easy, you were not self conscious at all."
HELEN HUNT: "I was more self conscious then I looked. actors are good when they have a task, so you don't think about how you look and my task was to be the emodiment of someone who says, "it's okay to love the bodies that we have because we won't have them forever."
The story is unusual, gripping and it felt personal perhaps because it highlights intimacy, not just sex.
Shireen: "In hollywood we tend to put things in a box, like this is a romantic comedy, this is a drama. A lot of people know that i have seen this film and they ask me what's it about?"
HELEN HUNT: "I think it's uh, funny surprising, heart opening look at being human."
Look-out for "The Sessions" come awards season.
Shireen: "I'm just gonna come out and say it, are you ready for an oscar?"
HELEN HUNT: "Sure."
Shireen: "Oscar nomination?"
HELEN HUNT: "You got one?"
Shireen: "In my purse"
