Midnight in middle earth was profitable, thanks to dwarves, elves and wizards they lined up to see "The Hobbit" which brought in 12 and a half million dollars at midnight screenings. But their quest is only matched by the actors' quest to get into character. Apparantly they don't use a lot of soap in middle earth.
Middle earth the land of hobbits, dwarfs, wizards, elves and dragons is back on the big screen.
IAN MCKELLEN: "this is an adventure story how when a little man leaves home and goes out for an adventure and the excitement partly is is he going to make it back home."
"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" it's a prequel to "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy and for some of the stars getting into character was old hat and old clothes.
IAN MCKELLEN: "He seems to have one outfit and he seems to sleep in it- that must be a bit wiffy. maybe he's got some self cleaning magic no he doesn't bc he looks filthy."
ian Mckellen is gandolf the gray gray as in his clothes are dirty.
IAN MCKELLEN: "Gandolf's underwear is some concern to our fans of the movies."
For Richard Armitage it wasn't about the costume, it was about getting into character. He headed to dwarf boot camp.
RICHARD ARMITAGE: "It was six weeks of training to learn how to move like dwarfs. bc they aren't human and they having different physicality and different skeletons."
For some becoming the residents of middle earth was no easy feat for their feet.
MARTIN FREEMAN: "It's a like a 10 min. job to put your feet on. In lord of the rings. it was like 45 min. so they have that down."
Hobbit's feet are large and hairy just imagine wearing shaquille o'neil's shoes with lots of hair glued to them.
MARTIN FREEMAN: "It helps you kind of find your hobbit bc it changes the way you walk literally."
Andy Serkis returned to middle earth as gollum -- The Hobbit who lost his precious ring.
As a performance capture technology guru, a day on set meant sticking on dots and letting movie magic do its thing.
ANDY SERKIS: "Performance capture technology allows you as an actor...it's such a liberating tool it enables you to play anything you aren't limited by your own size shape color sex."
From the dots to the dirt to the dirty feet middle earth is full of movie magic
