Gangster squad re-creates the late 40's battle for the soul of LA when an eastern mobster tried to take tinseltown. But Deco got the stars take on what it felt like to tool around town in 40's classic cars and make 'em go boom.
Josh Brolin's a cop assembling a "Ganster Squad" to take down 40's mobster Mickey Cohen.
Ryan Gosling's a reluctant recruit.
RYAN GOSLING: "The man that this character is based on is much cooler and braver than the character that I play. The real man himself didn't't need any convincing. My chara0cter did."
"Ganster Squad" is based on a real life struggle when Mickey's mob got a foothold in tinseltown.
JOSH BROLIN: "It was more really about the integrity of the guys and really bringing back something - an innocence and integrity."
And bringing back the look and feel of the 40s.
JOSH BROLIN: "My Dad came to the set and he/ we were looking out at the - at the street. He saw the old cars so it was nice to see it through his eyes. And go God I remember when I was (pointing) six years old and I was hanging out with my brother Brian - we took *that* car exactly, that type of car."
Oops! Course we all know Ryan can drive.
RYAN GOSLING: "Right. ha ha ha. But uh, driving a four on the floor is different. Those cars are - each on has their own...personality. They're kind of like horses you have to spend time with them to figure out how they work We had a few like funny (gestures) like trying to/ like in a getaway scene or something like that."
Even worse seeing a classic go boom.
RYAN GOSLING: "That's true. And the guys that bring you the cars it's like their - it's like their children. So it was actually scary to drive those cars but they're beautiful."
