More Bang for Your Buck: Home Trends
Most people put alot of *heart* into remodeling their homes. But you also need to use your *head* so you don't get in over your head. Tonight -- expert advice to help you get "more bang for your makeover buck."
WSVN-It's the bubble that hopefully won't burst... At least not for a long time. Home sales in South Florida continue to surge. But if you're looking to remodel, even a modest home can feel like a mansion.
Ricardo Dias: "Finding something trendy and something upbeat was also something we were looking at."
Ricardo and Erica wanted to give their condo a facelift. But to do it - they have to prioritize. This year, most interior decoraters will tell you the top rooms to renovate are the kitchen and the bathroom.
Ricardo Dias: "They want everything to be easy and fast."
For a new surface, try silestone. It costs about the same as granite plus it's scratch resistant and heat resistant and requires zero maintenance.
Javier Gerald: "We are not looking for a surface that's going to get scratched easily."
But if you can't afford to re-do the whole room, use moderation. For instance, just put silestone on an island or mix in less expensive material like porcelain.
Javier Gerald: "They are looking for something very contemporary, very slick, very functional."
As for the bathroom, the secret is you want to create a sense of serenity. It's no longer just a space to brush your teeth and brush your hair.
Javier Gerald: "Shower systems now come with different types of gadgets like hand showers, shower heads, body sprays, and thermostatic values."
Now if you don't have the room, consider rethinking your space. If you can tear down that small extra bedroom and create a big bathroom or even a walk-in closet, a master suite will only add value to your home.
Javier Gerald: "Its very unique."
As for Erica and Ricardo, they decided to invest in a brand new kitchen. Not only is the room functional, but hopefully it will add value when they're ready to relocate.
Erica Dias: "I think it's beautiful. I mean what's not to love. It's a dream kitchen. I think it's sleek. I think clean."
One more idea - if you are rebuilding or adding onto your home, consider a storage room. We all know having the extra space in South Florida can be very valuable.
