More Bang for Your Buck: Strategy at the Slots
As we all know, Broward County began converting race tracks into casinos earlier this month. But if you think gambling is all luck, think again. In tonight's More Bang For Your Buck, we found there is actually a winning startegy to the slots.
WSVN -- Move over, ponies. There's a new way to gamble at Gulfstream.
This month, the park became the first of four venues to bring Vegas style slots to South Florida. But, before you go, there may be a way to beat the house.
Steve Bourie: "They know that the casino has an advantage. They hope that they are going to get lucky and win."
Steve Bourie is the author of the American Casino Guide. He admits the one-armed bandits are basically about luck, but you can increase your odds by choosing the right game.
Steve Bourie: "There are different denominations of machines. They will start as low as a nickel, and they will go to as high as $100."
According to Steve, higher denomination machines usually pay out better and more often. He also suggests paying the maximum amount of coins when there is a progressive or accumulating jackpot.
Steve Bourie: "With a progressive machine, it usually has a jackpot that continuously builds, and, if you don't bet the maximum amount, you won't be eligible for the jackpot."
As for finding a hot slot, Steve has a rule. Try a machine three times. If you don't win anything, move on to the next.
You could be sitting at a slot going through a bad cycle or set for a low payback.
Steve Bourie: "In the long run, the casino has the mathematical advantage."
Also, remember -- location, location, location. Some experts believe loose slots are placed where players congregate, like in front of the bar or the entrance or anywhere other people can be enticed to keep playing.
Steve Bourie: "There is actually a strategy."
Just make sure that strategy includes receiving your earning in coins not credit.
This way, it's not as tempting to keep gambling when you surpass your budget.
Plus, remember to join the free slot club.
This way, even if you lose, you can still win points for free meals at the track.
Steve Bourie: "The more you put through the machine the more you will be eligible to get back in comps."
One more tip is that there is no difference between pulling the lever and pressing the button. It's all a matter of luck and timing.
