The Best of South Florida: Best Barbeque
Get your wetnaps ready for the perfect Fourth of July feast. When it comes to the area's best barbeque, everyone has an opinion.
(WSVN) Sweet, rich barbeque - the flavor you savor. Whether its ribs or chicken, the Best of South Florida is smokin.' And your taste buds don't lie. Great food and a friendly staff is why our viewers give the bronze medal to Sonny's in Ft. Lauderdale.
One Sonny's admirer says, "The people are really nice, the location's great. I love the baby-back ribs - they're excellent."
Plus if you're on a diet, you can feel guilt-free thanks to one of the area's largest salad bars. And don't forget their unique-tasting side items like baked beans, so hot they steam up our camera.
"Our beans have won several awards and I've tried other barbeque restaurants and I haven't tried anything close to what we have here."
Then you haven't tried our second place winner: Tom Jenkins on Federal Highway in Ft. Lauderdale.
"The main thing is we use real wood. we cook with hickory and oak wood. its the closest thing we can get to a real backyard bbq."
But this may be better than anything you cook at home.
"My family and I have been coming here for 4 years. Best bbq probably in the U.S."
That barbeque recipe has been years in the making.
"We started out in a trailer so we brought a lot of those people with us."
From outdoor trailer to culinary tradition. Talk about a success story you can sink your teeth into.
"It's really like a mom and pop place. It's not a franchise. It's family owned and operated."
A family atmopsphere to say the least.
"The day my son came home from the hospital from being born, we came here to pick up dinner."
But if you want to pick up the best barbeque in South Florida then you have to try Shorty's on South Dixie Highway.
"As far as I'm concerned, you've been eating here for 50 years, your loyal customers, we're doing something right."
That something right is one of the best menus in town.
"Probably our biggest sellers are our pork sandwich and baby back ribs. We have our own cole slaw that people all over the world have to have. The corn on the cob is a favorite, especially with people from out of the country."
But be warned: just one bite can be very addictive.
We have day to day customers that eat here 5-6 times a week.
