We all love grandma's cooking and know nothing compares to homemade desserts. Tonight, one celebrity television chef takes a step back into his childhood and shows us now to whip up one of his favorite family recipes. Time to grab A Bite With Belkys.
The Chef: Dave Lieberman
The Dish: Jewish Apple Cake
The Restaurant: Macy's Culinary Council
Ingredients for the apples:
- 3 Golden Delicious apples
- Juice of one lemon
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 tsp. of ground cinnamon
Ingredients for the batter:
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups of vegetable oil
- 1 stick of unsalted butter
- 2 cups of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup of warm water
- 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. of salt
- 1 tbs. of baking powder
Method of Preparation:
-First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Then start by peeling and coring the apples. Next, slice them and put them in a bowl. Add a cup of sugar, ground cinnamon, lemon juice and toss everything together.
-For the batter, mix flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
-Then, in another bowl, lightly whisk the eggs and add oil, vanilla extract, melted butter and warm water.
-Use a whisk to gradually stir the flour mixture with the wet ingredients. Be careful not to over mix.
-Next, butter and flour a bundt pan, so the cake does not stick. Chef Dave says you can also use a non-stick spray. Pour one layer of batter into the pan and throw in a few apple slices. Then, layer it again with more batter, apples, the liquid in the apple bowl and a final layer of batter.
-Lastly, place the bundt pan in the oven for about an hour and 10 minutes or until the top is nicely browned.
To Plate the Dish:
-Flip the bundt pan over a serving plate, and coat it with powered sugar.
Serving Suggestion: A cup of coffee
Serves: 12-15
