Bite with Belkys: Shepherd's Pie from The Fox and Hounds
Rumors have it that one of Prince William's favorite dishes will be served at the royal wedding. It's a traditional British dish, and to find out how to make it, we are stopping by one local British American Pub.
The Chef: Cara Schroder
The Restaurant: The Fox and Hounds
The Dish: Shepherd's Pie
2 Tbs of canola oil
1 lb of lean ground beef
1 onion, diced
3/4 cup of carrot, diced
1 Tbs of seasoning salt
1 Tbs of garlic powder
1 oz. of parsley, chopped
2 Tbs of worcestershire sauce
2 Tbs of gravy mix (or English Bisto)
2 Tbs of tomato sauce
3/4 cup of peas (canned)
mashed potato (mash 2 lb of peeled, cooked potatoes with 1/2 cup of sour cream and a pinch of salt and white pepper)
*upon request: grated cheddar cheese
Method of Preparation:
-Start by browning the ground meat beef in a pan. Once, you see enough fat in the pan (meat may be half cooked) remove the meat.
-Then, in the same pan sauté onions and carrots.
-Next, add seasoning salt, garlic powder, parsley and place the meat back in the pan. Stir this together.
-After, add worcestershire sauce and gravy mix. At the pub, they use an English gravy mix called Bisto. It can be found at the international section of grocery stores or in British markets.
-Then, pour in tomato sauce and let it simmer a bit more.
-Lastly, toss in canned peas (rinsed) and transfer all the goodness into four oven proof serving dish.
-Top the dish with mashed potato and cheese.
-Bake the shepherd's pie in a 450 degree oven for about 20 to 30 minutes or until its a nice golden brown.
Serving Suggestion: Bass Ale
Note: Take a printed copy of the recipe to the Pub and receive a complimentary second beverage (same as the first). Valid one month from air date.
