For students, fall means going back to school. For adults, fall means cooler temperatures and cool new styles. In tonight's Fashion Forward, Shireen Sandoval shows us what's hot when the weather's not.

WSVN -- From lean to layered to anything oversized. For fashionistas, fall is finally here, and that means buying key pieces to update your wardrobe.

At DKNY, it's all about the working girl -- from suits with school girl pleats to warm jackets for a polished look.

At Bill Blass, you'll find the little black dress is being dressed with flouncy necklines, sheer tops and satin sashes.

If there's one design detail that showed up on every catwalk, it's got to be the extra wide dolman sleeve.

Nanette Lepore showed it in both her coats and dresses.

Nanette Lepore: "Gorgeous big full sleeves and waists were all cinched and belted with like ties or scarves."

Cardigans that double as a jacket were all over the runwayat Ellen Tracy.

Either black or earth tones are definitely preffered, but, as Michael Kors shows us, color can be sexy too.

Michael Kors: "Taking something classic and twisting it, that's what I think really feels fresh to me."

At Paris Fashion Week, black was the color of choice for both Christian Lacroix and John Galliano for Dior.

Dior also showed off biker boots and plenty of leather.

But don't toss out your gold or neutrals just yet.

Christian Lacroix:  "Pales, black, grey. I think this is a season which does not request so many colors."

At Yves Saint Laurent, it's all about the form-fitting power suit, which is best worn belted over narrow pants or a tulip skirt. In fact, bold new shapes, romantic tops and lean leggings are in.

Fashion designer Carolina Herrera recently showed off her fall and resort collection at Neiman Marcus in Coral Gables.

Herrera is famous for dressing celebrities, but this season she says, it's all about dressing the real woman.

Shireen Sandoval: "I thought the clothes were absolutely beautiful. Let's talk about how women of this day and age can watch a fashion show like that and take those pieces and put them into their everyday lives."

Carolina Herrera: "My collections are between being very realistic and a little bit of fantasy. It's very important to have real dresses for real women."

Herrera's designs are feminine, fun, and this fall, full of volume.

Carolina Herrera: "I want them to look more beautiful then they are and feminine and show legs."

Whether you wear an oversized top or bottom, a cinched and slender waist is a must. Make sure to add a belt to your fall shopping list.
