It's a look that's been around for generations. But now, a fall classic is back in a hip and modern way. As 7's Diana Diaz shows us in tonight's Fashion Forward, plaid offers tons of possibilities if you know how to wear it.
WSVN -- The British and Scottish have been wearing it for centuries. It's a big look at Catholic schools too. But you don't have to live across the pond or be a school girl to wear plaid these days.
Joyce Gross: "Plaid is a trend we are seeing all over Europe. You can see it in coats as well as leggings, and in many different ways they are wearing it.
At Oyuki Boutique on South Beach, forget about plaid's checkered past. Here, you'll find it in everything from tops to jackets to handbags.
Joyce Gross: "You can find plaid in different colors and in different fabrics, you can find reds, pinks, yellows, and as well as the fabrics you can find wool and silk."
Wear a strapless plaid top with a trendy straight-leg jean to the mall. Or pair a plaid silk skirt with a pretty top for a quiet evening out.
It's a look you can take from day to night.
Joyce Gross: "You can wear it any time. During the day you can dress it down with jeans or just any simple bottom or top, and then, for nighttime, you can wear a plaid dress."
The British invasion is also taking over Macy's.
But, at this department store, forget lumber jack plaid and go for a more feminine pattern.
Melissa Goff: "This year what's different is that plaid is not for a school girl uniform look, it's very elegant and very sophisticated."
And very versaitile.
From red and black to brown and mauve, you can wear different styles and different fabrics.
Melissa Goff: "The newness this year in the plaid is going to be in the different colorations you're going to see, as well as the combinations as far as textures."
But what you'll definitely find is whether you're wearing a simple gray dress or an electric blue skirt, plaid is perfect for any occasion.
Melissa Goff: "You could see a very muted plaid paired up with a very soft silk top. Then again, you could see a very traditional glim plaid in a knicker and say paired up with a very untraditional T-shirt."
Make sure you don't wear plaid from head to toe. Also remember you can accessorize with a plaid handbag or plaid shoes.
