All Gretta's Got It

'Tis the season for holiday parties, but as any woman can tell you, knowing what to wear isn't always easy. We're decoding dress codes in today's Gretta's Got It.

WSVN -- Gretta Monahan: "Well, it's holiday time again, and you know what that means. Party! Party! Party! So much fun. The only time it's a little bit stressful is when you can't figure out how to decode the dress code, so I'm going to show you exactly how to do it, so you always get it right."

Gretta Monahan: "For guys, if it says black tie, that's easy, it has to be a tux. For women, formal used to mean full-length gowns. Not any more. Hemlines go higher and higher every year, so just go for it."

Gretta Monahan: "Stars like Eva Longoria have broken the mold in the last few years sporting short cocktail dresses on the red carpet and for formal award shows. Just be sure it's a standout. Sequins, beading and jewels can make a dress just as formal."

Gretta Monahan: "If you're lucky the invite will spell it out for you, but the two most common types: business casual and cocktail attire."

Gretta Monahan: "I'm at one of my favorite shops, Kenneth Cole, because they have looks that are classic and almost work for anything. She has on a sweater dress. Really chic, right? She can wear it to work then add this little bolero that really makes it glam."

Gretta Monahan: "Here's a tip on how to take the boring work dress to the party: pack an extra pair of heels. Make sure to add a little bit of metal because that always chics it up."

Gretta Monahan: "OK, so dudes can't be left out either. This clean black jacket is velvet, which really dresses it up. On his feet, pony kicks. That is so cool. A jacket always works, but leave the wool one at home and splurge on a velvet. Casual to dressy for the holidays."

Gretta Monahan: "Pulling off that party look is all in the accessories. Just remember always carry a clutch and leave the big bag in the car."

Gretta Monahan: "If you're invited to a house party, you can assume it's casual, but that does not mean, jeans, sloppy sweatshirt and tennis shoes. You've got to go with something that's casual and chic. Be comfortable, wear pants, great shoes and a cool little top. That's all you need."

Gretta Monahan: "And, fellas, if you want to be the talk of the party, do your casuals really stylish. Just adding this cool vest makes the look totally finished and different. Girls, here's the bottom line, when in doubt, always go with a dress. Try strapless because it's always flattering and formal."

Gretta Monahan: "If you dudes want to be dapper, just make sure to stay with the classics. White button shirt, dress belt, sleek pant and shiny shoes."

Gretta Monahan: "And a take out tip from my own closet: I always have a little shinny jacket. You can put it over work wear, jeans or dress, and it's pretty much good for any holiday party. I'm Gretta for Gretta's Got It."
