Living It Up: Hangliding
Tonight, we've got an extreme adventure for Jackie Johnson. She's going sky high without an engine and without a cockpit. Living It Up is Hangliding Over Biscayne Bay.
(WSVN) -- We are Living It Up in Coconut Grove at Miami Hangliding and if you ever dreamt of the freedom of flight, well we are about to take you on a bird's eye view of Biscayne Bay, come along for the flight.
Jackie: "Now I know you have to watch the weather right, before you go out, and what's the best conditions for weather to go hanglliding?"
Paul: "There's a lot of variables that can happen. We look at whether there's gust fronts or storms coming, we look at wind direction, we look at thermal index if we are flying over land trying to find lift."
Paul: "We start with the ground school to get you familiar with all the equipment that we are going to use."
Paul: "So this is called the harness, this is how we actually connect to the glider."
Paul: "I'm going to have you put one foot on the bar just like we will on the glider."
Jackie: "This feels neat. feels like a big swing."
Jackie: "Do I have to hold on all the time?"
Paul: "No you won't have to hold on all the time, the glider will actually fly itself."
Paul: "It's very small movements...if we want to go down or go faster, we just pull in, for you to turn, all we do is move your hip from one side to the other."
Jackie: "I'm ready, well let's take this outside and do it."
Jackie: "When people picture hangliding, they picture going off of a cliff, how do you do it on a boat, on the water."
Jackie: "We can actually find a way to accelerate ourselves over the water using the boat in a wind system."
Jackie: "Okay I'm excited."
Jackie: "Can I trust you with my life?
Paul: "Absolutely."
Paul: "It's an extremely safe sport, we wear helmets and parachutes."
Jackie: "Here we go!"
Paul: "You ready? Flight of your life, here we go!"
Paul: "Clear!"
Jackie: "Oh wow! This is amazing!"
Paul: "We'll get up to about 1,200 feet and then the boat will continue to tow us and when they slow down, we'll actually release ourselves."
Paul: "And we're flying like a bird."
Jackie: "Wow"
Jackie: "Omigosh look at downtown Miami."
Jackie: "We are about to land."
Paul: "We are actually going to come in regular, bring the nose of the glider up and land on the pontoons."
Jackie: "And that's what it's like living it up hangliding in South Florida, and it was awsome, everyone's definitely got to try it so a big thanks goes to Miami Hangliding."
Jackie: "There's no sharks out here are there?"
