Living It Up: Defense Training At Dolphins Camp
Everybody knows the Miami Dolphins have high expectations for 2003. But tonight, we unveil the team's secret weapon. Jackie Johnson's joining the defense for a day. She's Living It Up with all-pro linebacker Zach Thomas.
(WSVN) -- Jackie: "We are living it up at the Dolphins training facility, we've got the great Zach Thomas and he's going to teach me how to tackle."
Zach: "Jackie, enough of the talking, let's go play some football."
Jackie: "Well I'm sure you've got friends out there, do you ever feel bad about hitting them?"
Zach: "Well when you are on the field you try not to think like that because those same friends will take your job and the same friends can hurt you, it's a rough job, that's why the NFL stands for 'Not For Long'."
Jackie: "You do a lot of conditioning to prepare yourself, what kind of drills will you be showing us today?"
Zach: "These are supposed to be linemen, the big guys on the other side that are trying to get in your way. The biggest key is to stay in low, it's all about leverage."
Jackie: "Show me what you would do."
Zach: "We just start here and we get low and we just kind of pop our feet pop our feet."
Jackie: "So when you are in a game this really comes in handy doing drills like this?"
Zach: "The game is about speed, and strength, if you can't get there, it doesn't matter how strong you are."
Zach: "This is our tackling dummy."
Zach: "When I'm coming at somebody, the ball carrier, I want to hit him right in the chest."
Jackie: "I just want to hit it like this?"
Zach: "But you want to get low, you want to be low into them."
Zach: "And once you've got them down you can taunt them a little bit."
Jackie: "What's a good thing to say to him once you've knocked him down?"
Zach: "You tell them they're weak and you talk about their mama, it gets in their head and then they'll be a little intimidated."
Zach: "These are the big guys in front of me. I'm about 5 yards back from the line of scrimmage from the other team, these guys are right on the line of scrimmage, they are on my defensive side and we got Jason Taylor at the end, Tim Bowens, Larry Chester, and Wally."
Jackie: "They look so different in person."
Zach: "I have responsibility of this "a" gap."
Jackie: "So you have to run in between there."
Zach: "I have to run in between there if they run the ball there."
Zach: "You really gotta know offense as well as defense because you are studying them at all times, that's where I get my edge up on people, watching a lot of tape, watching a lot of games and having a knowledge of the game."
Zach: "This isn't weathercasting, this is football, you gotta get your mind right, you gotta look mean, you can't smile."
Jackie: "Put me in the game coach."
Jackie: "And that's what it's like Living It Up learning how to play football with the great Zach Thomas. Thank you, Zach."
Zach: "Thank you, Jackie"
On Tuesday, Jackie's taking up the sport of archery.
Then next Thursday, she's back with the Dolphins. Jackie's learning how to be the team's next kicker.
