Living It Up: Kicking At Dolphins Training Camp
Tonight, Jackie Johnson's going for gridiron glory... trading in weather maps for shoulder pads. This time, Jackie's Living It Up with the Dolphin's star kicker, Olindo Mare, learning how to score a fieldgoal.
(WSVN) -- Jackie: "We are living it up at the Dolphins training facility kickin' it with Olindo Mare, if you want to learn what it takes to be one of the best kickers in the NFL, well here's how."
Jackie: "What is your technique, what do you think makes you different from other kickers?"
Olindo: " Most of the kickers now in the league are smaller guys like myself, under 6 feet ...Just for the simple fact that it's easier to get under the ball, they have smaller feet, less room for error."
Jackie: "I know it's the loneliest job on the field, do you ever feel pressure?"
Olindo: "You can be the greatest guy in the world the next day or the guy that nobody wants to talk to and that's something you deal with."
Jackie: "Just tell me some of the basic techniques."
Olindo: "We like to kick up in this, its the hardest part of the foot and if you can lock your ankle and your knee at the same time, that gives it the most power down there."
Olindo: "Now you are going to hold one for me as I kick it, and I'll show you how to put it down."
Olindo: "What I do is put my toe here and you are going to put the ball right in front - just like that, straight up"
Jackie: "So how do you like him to hold the ball?"
Olindo: "You want the laces to go right toward the goal post, the reason for this is that it's the heaviest part of the ball, so if the ball is this way, the ball's going to go this, and if the ball's that way, it's going to go that way."
Olindo: "Once the ball's down, it's all up to me."
Jackie: "But it all happens so quickly."
Olindo: "You have under 1.3 seconds from the snap until the ball's off into the air."
Olindo: now the biggest thing is to get the ball up. you got to get it up pretty quick or those guys are going to block it"
Olindo: "With all of the techniques that I taught you, it's your turn to kick the ball."
Jackie: "Allright, laces out."
Olindo: "The thing is your left arm is always going to be out and you want this arm to come across your body, and what this does is keep your head down and your shoulder down."
Jackie: "I said laces out!"
Jackie: "It's good, and that's what its like learning how to kick with Olindo Mare, big thanks to you."
