Living It Up: Learning Archery
Tonight, Living It Up is all about aim, accuracy, and maybe a little luck. Jackie Johnson's got her eye on the target. She's borrowed a bow, an arrow, and now, she's headed out to the practice range.
(WSVN) -- Jackie: "We are Living It Up right on target, if you want to learn the sport of archery, well, we will teach you how to get a bullseye."
Jackie: "So what kind of skills do you need to be good at this?"
Kevin: "It's just like basic your hand eye coordination, if you can point your finger at something, you can pretty much shoot a bow and arrow."
Jackie: "And so if somebody's never tried archery before, how hard is it to learn?"
Kevin: "Very easy...we have about a 10 minute safety course that we take them through, and we can have them up and shooting in 30 minutes."
Jackie: "So what am I going to be starting off with today?"
Kevin: "We'll start you off on the easiest one here, it's the easiest to learn."
Kevin: "They go from these recurve-style limbs to these limbs that have wheels, eccentric wheels and that's actually the compound bow, all the way over to this style set up right here which is basically a compound bow set up for hunting."
Kevin: "And this is actually an Olympic bow here."
Jackie: " And what's the biggest difference between this and what I'll be starting off with today?"
Kevin: "It's a lot more accurate."
Jackie: "Well you want to start off with the basics?"
Kevin: "Sure, definitely."
Jackie: "So what is this for?"
Kevin: "This is so the string doesn't hit you."
Kevin: "And what you'll do is, the arrow's going to be right here, you're going to put your hand right underneath the arrow, point your left hand at the bulls eye and just draw this right back to the corner of your mouth."
Kevin: "And when you are ready to aim, just look at that little red dot right here, put that little red dot right on the bullseye and just open your fingers. You ready?"
Jackie: "I'm ready."
Jackie: "I feel like Robin Hood."
Jackie: "Now why did it go lower?"
Kevin: "You weren't all the way back."
Jackie: "Okay, let's try it again."
Jackie: "So I want a tight grip when I first start and then I want to loosen it as I pull back, keep my left arm bent and pull this all the way back to my face."
Jackie: "I'm going to try to get a bullseye, think I can do it?"
Jackie: "It has definitely hit the spot learning archery at the Everglades Archery Club."
