All Living It Up

When it comes to taking care of our furry friends, you got to have animal instincts. Tonight, Jackie Johnson's ready to sink her claws into her newest assignment. She's Living It Up as a vet for the day.

(WSVN) -- Jackie: "I'll be with you in just a minute. Hello and welcome to Wiles Road Animal Hospital and I'll be Living It Up as your veterinarian today. Don't look so scared. It won't hurt a bit. You know what? Maybe this will help you."

Jackie and Dr. Steven Paul walk through exam door.

Jackie: "All right, who do we have here?"

Dr. Paul: "This is Lexy and Lexy needs a dental cleaning right now. You see the white of the tooth, Jackie? And then you see the brown there and there's even a red rim there. That's something that's going to cause a lot of problems."

Dr. Paul: "And we are going to go ahead and induce, meaning put the animal under anesthesia."

Jackie: "How dangerous is it to do this?"

Dr. Paul: "There's always concern because anaesthesia is in fact a plane between life and death."

Close-up of tube being put down dog's throat.

Jackie: "So that goes down into the airway to help her breathe."

Dr. Paul: "Yeah, now we are connected to her lungs and her lungs will receive the anaesthetic gas. Go ahead and feel how relaxed she is, Jackie."

Jackie: "So you can really get in there and clean it."

Dr. Paul: "You always want to go to your veterinarian and get a tip of nose and tip of tail exam, and what you are looking at is to make sure the eyes are nice and clear. There's no redness to the eye. The nose is clear of discharge, and then we just take a look at the mouth."

Jackie examines cat.

Jackie: "I don't see any fleas."

Jackie puts on a stethescope and listens.

Dr. Paul: "You hear that?"

Jackie: "Yeah."

Jackie: "Sometimes with kitty cats, they'll purr so loudly, it's hard to hear them."

Jackie putting cat away and then Jackie and Dr. Paul Walking into room with bird.

Jackie: "All right, Evelyn, what is Winston in here for today?"

Evelyn: "He's going to have a regular exam and his wings clipped."

Jackie clipping bird's wings.

Jackie: "Now, can they feel it when we trim them?"

Dr. Paul: "No. Now you can see the bird's not objecting at all; kind of like cutting your nails. You don't feel that at all."

Parker the dog walking through door.

Dr. Paul: "This is Parker."

Jackie: "Hi, Parker, you're beautiful."

Dr. Paul: "He's 3-years-old, and he's in need of a vaccine today."

Jackie giving injection to dog.

Jackie: "Speak, speak."

Dog barks and then Jackie gives him a treat.

Jackie: "Well doctor Paul that was a lot of work, I cannot believe how much goes into being a vet for the day."

Dr. Paul: "It's always an interesting day at a veterinary hospital. See the difference Jackie?"

Jackie: "Yes, a huge difference."

Jackie: "And take a look at how beautiful Lexy's teeth are! She's waking up doing just fine, and that's the payoff. That's what it's like Living It Up like a vet for the day. A big thanks to the Wiles Road Animal Hospital.
