It's sounds like science fiction: a powder that grows back limbs, but for one South Florida family it's a miracle. Seven's Lynn Martinez shows us how this Magic Dust works.
WSVN -- It started out as a normal day for the Meraz family, but it ended in a trip to the emergency room.
Jeanette Meraz: "Froylan didn't notice. He was behind him, and he just closed the door and closed it and grabbed Jeevan's finger."
14-month-old Jeevan was screaming.
Froylan Meraz: "It was bad, it was bad. Blood all around the floor."
Doctors said part of his thumb had been severed.
Froylan Meraz: "On our way back, we found the finger on the floor."
This is what Jeevan's thumb looked like when he went to see Dr. Juan Bravo.
Dr. Juan Bravo: "It was a diagonal cut, including the tip, plus all the way back to the nail bed."
Doctors didn't have much hope the thumb would heal properly.
Jeanette Meraz: "I don't want him to lose his finger, his nail."
That's when Dr. Bravo decided to try a new product called Matristem.
Dr. Juan Bravo: "This dust has bioactive components that goes to this wound and tells the stem cells of different tissues what they need to do."
Matristem is made from pigs bladder and contains collagen, elastin and glyco-proteins. All proteins that work together to help the body re-start the natural healing process.
Dr. Juan Bravo: "They go in and tell the tissue, 'You need to re-grow skin,' or if it's a muscle tissue, 'You need to re-grow muscle,' if it's the bone, 'You need to re-grow bone.'"
The powder was applied to Jeevan's thumb every other day for two weeks.
Dr. Juan Bravo: "Within a week, we could see very healthy tissue. Within two weeks, it looked like the skin was growing."
Two weeks later, this was the result. The thumb had completely re-grown, including the entire nail, like magic.
Jeanette Meraz: "Yeah, like magic because when I saw his nail, I said 'Oh, my God.' Just in two weeks he has his nail back."
And the developers of Matristem say this is only the beginning.
Dr. Juan Bravo: "The government is looking into using this product on our guys coming back from combat with wounds, amputations, etc."
But all this family knows right now is the magic dust that helped Jeevan get back to normal.
Froylan Meraz: "I think it's great. I think it's going to do a lot of changes for a lot of people out there."
Lynn Martinez: "Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh are currently re-growing human bladders, and they hope the powder will re-grow other organs like the liver and kidneys."
