Medical Reports: Baldness Breakthroughs
For many of us, our hair is part of feeling attractive and whether you're a man or woman, losing it, is embarassing. But now there are new ways to help regrow hair. In tonight's special assignment report, we check out the latest Baldness Breakthroughs.
WSVN -- From hair flops to bad mops, hair is a big part of who we are.
Twenty-three-year-old Mike Peduzzi is worried about keeping all of his hair.
Research now shows you can inherit baldness from your mother and father. Mike's chances aren't looking so good.
Mike Peduzzi: "For years it's been like looking at my father's head and being like, that's not where I want to go."
But he's already heading that way.
Mike Peduzzi: "Right here is where I'm losing my hair, and it's receding hair line is getting stronger and stronger."
In hopes of breaking the family chain, Mike started using the Hairmax Lasercomb, which is FDA-approved only for men.
Leo Benjamin, hair loss expert: "The best person is someone at the very beginning of hair loss, with enough hair follicles that could regenerate."
You simply hold the laser on your head for about 15 minutes a day.
It's supposed to increase blood flow to the scalp and strengthen hair.
Mike Peduzzi: "It has a little nice warm sensation to it."
Hypnotherapist: "Notice your hair, your scalp. Breath in."
But others battling hair loss are using hypnosis to regrow hair.
Gemma Calvo decided to get hypnotized after extreme stress caused her to lose chunks of hair.
Gemma Calvo: "You could see the holes where my hair would be. There was no hair here."
It got so bad, she didn't want anyone to see her.
Gemma Calvo: "People would come to the house, I wouldn't even greet them beause I was too embarrassed."
During hypnosis, therapists target stress.
Sheena Eizmendiz, hypnotherapist: "We teach you to manage your stress, and, by lowering your stress then your immune system is heightened."
Then they work on helping you grow the hair back.
Sheena Eizmendiz: "Imagine your hair as long as you want it to be."
Basically, telling the patient to imagine themselves with the hair they want.
Sheena Eizmendiz: "That they are being awakened and, by this process, you are able to see that the hair does in fact grow."
A couple of studies show hypnosis does work.
Gemma believes it. Her stress is down and her hair is back to normal.
Gemma Calvo: "It feels good, you know, to see me like this."
Mike has to wait a bit longer for results, but says two months with the laser comb has been a bit of a hair-raising experience.
Mike Peduzzi: "I have noticed a difference in the strength of my hair."
Something he hopes strengthens his chances of keeping all his hair.
Once you start using the haircomb, expect to keep using it indefinitely to see results.
As for hypnosis, it can take about four to six sessions to start seeing a difference.
