Medical Reports: No Scar Weight Loss Surgery
There is new hope for overweight people trying to lose excessive pounds. A new weight loss procedure can be done without any cutting or scars! 7's Diana Diaz has details in today's Healthcast.
WSVN -- Veronica Mahaffey was looking for a clean break from the fat. At her heaviest she weighed in at 215 pounds, and nothing she tried seemed to help her shed the weight.
Veronica Mahaffey: "I was just on no carbs, diet pills, I hate those. South Beach, Optifast, did that."
Veronica decided to become one of the first to take part in the pose clinical trial at UC San Diego, where they're using a new weight loss procedure.
Veronica Mahaffey: "I lost 12 pounds in the first week."
The idea behind it is similar to other weight loss surgeries, such as the lap band making the stomach smaller, so patients feel full. But, there is a big difference with this procedure.
Dr. Garth Jacobsen, Surgeon, UC San Diego: "This surgery can be done completely endoscopically. That's down the mouth without any incisions at all."
Surgeons thread the endoscope down the throat and into the stomach. They then suture the top part of the stomach shut, making it about one-third smaller.
Dr. Garth Jacobsen: "We're taking the part of the stomach that stretches the most and eliminating the ability of it to stretch."
The pose procedure is first being tested on patients who need to lose 30 to 50 pounds, have a BMI of 28 to 33, and have a history of being overweight or obese for two or more years.
Veronica went home the next day, but her diet was strict.
Veronica Mahaffey: "I can eat three bites and then I'm done."
Now at 145 pounds, Veronica is happy with her weight, which has impacted her whole family.
Veronica Mahaffey: "Happy mom, happy kids, happy everybody."
While doctors hope the sutures will hold for a lifetime, re-stretching is possible and long term outcomes are still unknown.
