WSVN -- Betsy Blume: "Start feeling your hands, gently rub them together, feel that sensation."
This may look like any other yoga class, but these women all have breast cancer.Betsy Blume: "I had repeated dreams that something was wrong under my left arm."
Betsy was diagnosed at 43.Risa Grafals: "I went for my yearly mammogram and there it was."
Risa also fought the disease. She's had both breasts removed and went through a tough round of chemo.Risa Grafals: "I was completely incapacitated with this chemo."
But it was through this yoga class that both women found the strength and support they needed.Corey Becker, Mind-Body Fitness Specialist, Memorial Regional West: "It's a gathering of women that inspire each other."
Corey becker teaches the class. As a mind-body fitness specialist and a registered nurse. She knows how important it is for women fighting breast cancer to make time for themselves.Corey Becker: "So, it's time for a woman to connect to herself physically, her emotions, and then also connect to other women who are experiencing the same things."
The class focuses on the physical and the emotional. Corey has the women do stretching and breathing exercises for the body connection. Then, they meditate, which is the mind connection.Corey Becker: "And then at the end, we gather in a circle, and they have the opportunity to speak, to be heard."
Betsy says Corey's class has taught her to listen to her body.Betsy Blume: "Because there's a lot of things that happen to women that don't have big red flags that go up to let us know there's something the matter."
Risa says sharing with other women going through a similar journey gave her inner strength.Risa Grafals: "I felt a definite bonding, and to this day the bonding is still there."
Corey says Pink Ribbon Yoga carries a very powerful message for all women.Corey Becker: "Knowing that they have a natural healer within, being advocates for themselves, speaking up for themselves."
Pink Ribbon Yoga meets every Wednesday at the Memorial Regional West fitness center.
