Medical Reports: Elijah's Song
We all know music can inspire and move you, and a 13-year-old boy from Boca Raton has a touching message for anyone who is struggling in life. Tonight, 7's Rosh Lowe has a special report, Elijah's Song.
WSVN -- Most teenagers can't say they've rocked out with a famous musician, but then again 13-year-old Elijah Webberly always had a special way of making things happen.
Matisyahu, Singer: "Elijah was the kind of the kid when you met him, you would do whatever he wanted you to do."
Matisyahu, a chart-topping, hasidic reggae star, was approached in a synagogue a few years ago and asked to meet a very special fan. A boy from Boca Raton named Elijah. Like many Jewish boys, Elijah idolized the singer.
Wendy Webberly, Elijah's Mom: "He would listen to the music on the way to school and he would sing it. It has always been Elijah's dream to meet Matisyahu."
The star's inspirational music of 'hope' and 'peace' was especially meaningful to Elijah. The young boy had already lost his father to a devastating disease and then at just 11 years old Elijah was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer.
Wendy: "The prognosis wasn't good, so we knew it would be hard to fight."
To those who knew Elijah it wasn't the cancer that defined him, it was his spirit and will to live. Even a big super star like Matisyahu knew there was something different about this little fan.
Matisyahu: "Right when we met, we really clicked. He was just a special kid when you looked into his eyes such a pure, innocent, beautiful soul."
The unlikely pair actually became friends and Matisyahu even surprised Elijah at his bar mitzvah where he let Elijah belt out all of his popular songs.
Wendy: "There was one song that he really loved called 'One Day'. Every time Elijah sang that song, everyone thought it was about Elijah."
Wendy: "What a dream come true for a child to be able to do that."
Elijah had an even bigger dream to write and record a song with Matisyahu.
Matisyahu: "He was singing my songs. I said, you need to write your own songs, because obviously he had been through a lot in his life."
But when the time came, Elijah's condition worsened and he was hospitalized.
Matisyahu: "We decided we would go to the hospital and we'll try to record a song with him there. It wasn't easy. There were machines beeping and to get his voice loud enough, because he was sick he wasn't in good shape."
For hours Elijah pressed on through tremendous pain writing and singing a song about God and never giving up. Hours later, Elijah left this world.
Matisyahu: "It was very hard, but at the same time we felt like so blessed to be in this situation, where we were able to bring down something that will be eternal for him."
The song recorded in the icu is titled 'Elijah's Song' and thanks to his super star friend, the boy's song is now being heard all over the country.
Matisyahu: "Whenever I sing that song, I feel I'm with him. I feel our spirits are intertwined."
Wendy: "The biggest legacy a parent could have for her child, I think, the words that he wrote, 'never give up, never quit.' I think that's the lesson for all of us."
Elijah may be gone, but his message of hope is very much alive.
An organization called Kids of Courage, which helps improve the lives of kids with serious medical conditions helped make Elijah's dream come true to record the song with Matisyahu.
