Medical Reports: See The Light
Having a healthy smile is important to all of us, but for people with dental implants a common infection used to mean painful surgery Until now. 7's Christine Cruz shows us how one dentist is helping his patients See the Light.
WSVN -- Miriam Feldman is proud of her smile now, but it wasn't long ago she needed dental implants to replace some missing teeth.
Miriam Feldman: "My bite was off and it was difficult eating and so forth."
She had three implants put in and later found out she had an infection.
It's called peri-implant disease, a chronic inflammation of the tissue surrounding the implant. Dentist Peter Rubelman says the worst part is most patients don't even know they have it.
Dr. Peter Rubelman: "Sometimes there's no symptoms that the patient is aware of. It's a silent disease."
But if they don't get treatment right away the could lose the implant.
Dr. Peter Rubelman: "The bone has been eaten away by the bacteria that have come into this area."
Miriam had suffered some bone loss and was told she could either have surgery or try something new.
It's called the perio-lase laser. The only FDA approved laser to treat peri-implant disease. It works by killing the bacteria around the implant.
Dr. Peter Rubelman: "It's been a tremendous breakthrough because there's no cutting, there's no swelling, there's no pain afterwards."
Miriam only needed one laser treatment and her bone started to grow back.
Dr. Peter Rubelman: "After 4 months, you can see where the bone has grown back in, in this area, and now we have a stable, healthy implant."
Miriam was thrilled she didn't need surgery to save her implants.
Miriam Feldman: "I didn't have pain with the laser."
Now she has no trouble showing off her pearly whites.
Miriam Feldman: "Very happy, very happy. Thank you."
The best way to help prevent peri-implant disease is to practice good oral hygiene and not to smoke.
