Going through breast cancer surgery and treatment is difficult enough. Yet, as 7's Lynn Martinez reports few women are being offered treatment that would help after breast cancer.
WSVN -- Aimee Zadak is excited her company is really taking off.
Aimee Zadak: "Balloonatics is bigger than I ever, ever dreamed of."
The family-run business provides balloons for corporate and sporting events.
Aimee Zadak: "We are 24/7."
But her entire world stopped two years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Aimee Zadak: "We as females have this gut instinct that something's not right."
Aimee went on-liner researching everything she could about the disease. She was worried about making the right decision about her surgery.
Aimee Zadak: "I decided to have a double mastectomy."
She also chose to have reconstructive surgery at the same time.
Aimee Zadak: "Nine hour surgery, nine hour surgery."
Doctors say the rate of breast cancer is going up.
Dr. Jonathan Weiser: "About one in seven women in this country are going to have breast cancer."
But recent studies found very few women are being offered reconstruction.
Dr. Jonathan Weiser: "About 35 percent of women in this country, who have breast cancer and breast cancer surgeries, are offered reconstruction, only 35 percent.
Plastic surgeon Jonathan Weiser says one of the main reasons why is money.
Dr. Jonathan Weiser: "It may not be cost-effective for a lot of these doctors to do these larger surgeries."
But Dr. Weiser says studies prove women do much better after reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Jonathan Weiser: "They feel much better about themselves. They do much better with their families and their sexual relationships. They do better in their jobs."
Aimee says having breast reconstruction was one of the best decisions she's ever made.
Aimee Zadak: "I'm telling you the breast cancer isn't the issue, it's the psycho-social affects of the breast cancer."
She says every woman deserves to be told what their options are and if they're not.
Aimee Zadak: "The only thing I can say is ask, ask, ask, ask away."
On October 25th the Memorial Cancer Institute will be celebrating bra day, breast reconstruction awareness. Celebrity Guiliana Rancic will be in town to talk about her journey through breast cancer.
