Medical Reports: Cleaning for Cancer
Most days patients battling cancer feel sick, weak and often find it hard to get out of bed. But now a program is offering women battling cancer free help in their household. 7's Alexis Rivera shows us how they're Cleaning for Cancer.
Suzanne Ferguson: "I look like a totally different person."
The 49-year-old was diagnosed with a blood cancer last fall. Since then she's had a bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy and other harsh treatments.
Suzanne Ferguson: "Feeling very weak, feeling tired. Some days I just lay in bed all day, and the side effects of the drugs."
Like many cancer patients Suzanne struggles with daily chores like cleaning. Plus her doctors don't want her doing it.
Suzanne Ferguson: "My immune system is like a baby. They are afraid of dust and dirt, it can make me ill."
But thanks to the Miami Cleaning Service "Maid Green," she's getting some much needed help. The business is part of a nationwide program called Cleaning for a Reason.
Petter Nahed: "Cleaning for a Reason provides four cleanings for women who are undergoing cancer treatment, free of charge."
A small team arrives at a patient's home armed with supplies.
Petter Nahed: "We clean the areas that need the most attention. Usually the bathrooms, the kitchen and the floors."
Maid Green only uses green products, which owner Petter Nahed feels makes a big difference for cancer patients.
Petter Nahed: "Their immune system completely gets shut down, so by giving a green cleaning, something that has no harsh chemicals that would affect them, we are helping their bodies heal better."
Petter decided to offer the free service after watching his own mom suffer through cancer.
Petter Nahed: "It's the benefit of seeing someone who's in desperate need, as I saw my mom when she was recovering from cancer treatment"
His mom even pays it forward now by helping clean.
Claudia Nahed: "To put the smile on the cancer patients they don't have to worry about cleaning."
And as Suzanne recovers, a clean house gives her a reason to smile during a hard time.
Suzanne Ferguson: "It smells good. And you know clean spaces always make you feel better."
