Money Monday: Travel Smart
We all know the cost of traveling just keeps going up, but on tonight's Money Monday, 7's Lynn Martinez has tips that will save you big money and help you travel smart.
WSVN -- Dana Rhoden loves to pack her bags and go.
Dana Rhoden: "This month in particular I was in Las Vegas, New York, LA and I'm going to Argentina at the end of the month."
All that travel time has taught her how to travel smart. She starts with getting the best deals online.
Dana Rhoden: "When I rent a car, I actually go to priceline.com and I come up with my own price for what I want to pay for the rental and nine times out of ten they'll give me that price and it's always about 60 to 70 percent off the price that I might have found online."
Priceline also has deep discounts on hotels and flights.
Travel agent Stella Jaramillo says there are lots of ways to save money, like booking two one-way tickets instead of one round trip.
Stella Jaramillo, Travel Agent: "One-way you have a little bit more options that you can look at. One way, one airline going into Miami airport then one way with another airline going into Ft. Lauderdale. The key thing is to really be flexible and to look at your different options."
Here are some other money saving tips: This time of year consider flying on the holiday it can save you up to 30 percent. Eleventh-hour airline tickets can also be a steal, since airlines try to fill their flights at the last minute, and go for the least expensive rental car, often you could be in for a free upgrade.
Stella Jaramillo: "Most of the car companies their inventories are in minimal and so the time and you go and check in
they might not have that vehicle ready for you, so they usually will give you a category upgrade or two, which is a nice bargain there."
Here's a tip that will save you a hassle, if your flight is canceled don't wait in line to get rescheduled, use your cell and call airline reservations right away.
Stella Jaramillo: "The advantage is that you can get yourself booked before everybody else gets to the counter and there's no more seats to protect you."
And one more tip, once your check into your hotel, always ask for a free upgrade. If they're not booked they might just give it to you.
