Saving money at the grocery store usually involves tracking sales and using coupons, but there's another way to save that many people overlook. In tonight's Money Monday, 7's Lynn Martinez says you might think of it as cold hard cash.
WSVN -- For Terri Gault grocery shopping is a savings game.
Terri Gault: "The best way to save money on groceries is to buy before you need it because then it's on sale."
Terri teaches people ways to save on her website The Grocery Game. Today's lesson is all about stockpiling your freezer.
Terri Gault: "I think most people don't realize how valuable their freezer can be for a lot of things. Number one, saving money."
Terri says whenever anything is on sale buy it and freeze it, including fresh produce. Most veggies like broccoli can be frozen you just have to blanch in boiling water for a couple of minutes cool in ice then put in bags and freeze.
Terri Gault: "Now you've just frozen a great price."
Freezing fruit like strawberries and blueberries is even easier.
Terri Gault: "You're freezing them on a tray so that they will freeze individually and won't be all smushed together in a bag. They're wonderful to add to smoothies and juices, and great for an after school snack."
Juices freeze well too just remember liquid expands so pour a little off before you freeze. Frozen tomatoes are perfect for salsas and soups. And butter and cheese can go straight from the freezer to the table.
Terri Gault: "I always freeze my grated cheese because it's going to last longer and I really don't like waste. Your freezer is a wonderful thing for that and you'll never waste cheese."
You can freeze milk and yogurt too although it might taste better in shakes and smoothies.
Freezing meat is a no-brainer, but did you ever think of freezing lunchmeat? Terri always stocks up when it's on sale.
Terri Gault: "Freezing is very simple. Number one, air is the enemy of the food so make sure it's air tight. Number two, is the time it's in the freezer so you always want to mark it with the date that you froze it."
The Food and Drug Administration has a website that can tell you how long everything will stay fresh in the fridge and freezer from meats to bread. It's all about learning to freeze your favorite foods. And the fabulous sales prices.
Terri Gault: "You could easily save 67 percent off your entire grocery bill if you're shopping, investing in sales, storing things properly, freezing and buying before you need it."
Also, a full freezer works more efficiently and food in a full fridge will stay frozen longer during a power outage.
