Money Monday: Grad Gifts
It's time to go shopping for graduation gifts, but what do you get for college grads headed into the real world? 7's Lynn Martinez has some advice in tonight's Money Monday.
Number one on the grads gift list this year is cold hard cash!!
Matthew Barrow: "Many of us graduates are trying to start out our lives, we don't really have many savings just having gone through school and having a bit of extra money in pocket really does help us out."
Tiffany is moving out of her dorm at FIU and is getting ready to start over in grad school.
Tiffany DeLeon: "I'm going to get my master's at Nova Southeastern University."
Her cash gifts will come in handy there.
Tiffany DeLeon: "I'm probably going to save a lot of it for my master's so I can have the extra cash there and also to go on a little shopping spree to spoil myself after working so hard."
When it comes to getting your college grad gifts, the experts say take time to find out what they need.
Yisell Cirion: "Definitely there would be priorities and it's important to understand and to talk and have that open conversation with the graduates."
A great gift will help them manage their money. So gift a session with a financial counselor or a subscription to business and finance magazines.
Grads can always use a frame to hold that new diploma or a leather portfolio for job interviews.
Since many will be moving, you might think about helping them pay moving expenses. Or for those with new jobs, new clothes and accessories.
Yisell Cirion: "We want to invest in the overall look of our graduate so we can look at professional clothing or attire. Also, looking at a business card holder because they would be exchanging business cards."
But gifts don't all have to be practical. Sometimes you want to help them remember this important day.
Matthew Barrow: "I've heard people receiving watches and things like that with sentimental value to sort of mark the day that was so important to you."
Another gift idea can be to pay a membership fee to an organization in your graduates field to help them network and stay connected.
