Parent to Parent: Greenie Tots
Parents on the go know how hard it can be to find time to put a healthy, hot meal on the table for their kids, especially after a long day at work. 7's Lynn Martinez tells us in Parent to Parent that one local mom is making it easier for all parents to do just that.
WSVN -- Rhonda Abdullah used to stress about making her kids good, healthy meals.
Rhonda Abdullah: "My husband and I work full-time and, you know, serving something healthy is not easy to do, but it's something that needs to happen."
That's when she heard about Greenie Tots: organic, kid-friendly, meatless meals you can order on-line.
Rhonda Abdullah: "I don't like drive-thrus, so this is a perfect way. It's in the freezer, it's always there, there's great variety, fruits and vegetables. It's food the kids eat."
The idea for Greenie Tots was cooked up by yet another working mom, Jilea Hemmings.
Jilea Hemmings, founder of Greenie Tots: "We found ourselves wanting our son to eat healthy but sometimes not having the time to make the food ourselves, and when we looked at the grocery store, we couldn't find any options that actually met the needs we were looking for."
So Jilea got busy in the kitchen making healthy meals she could freeze, then realized she could cook for other busy parents too.
Now, clients can order six meals for about $30.
Jilea Hemmings: "We vacuum-seal it in vacuum seal bags, and then we load it into boxes and freeze it, so it's flash-frozen. Then, once it's fully frozen, we ship it out overnight."
Jilea makes everything, from organic macaroni and cheese, pasta and sauce and "chicken" nuggets.
Jilea Hemmings: "We use a mushroom protein for our chicken quesadillas and for pasta marinara, so it's derived from mushrooms. It takes on a really nice texture of meat."
And the kids?
Rhonda Abdullah: "They like it. To me, sometimes I don't think they really know if it's real meat or not real meat, or if it's chicken or "chicken," which is nice."
Healthy and quick and for working parents. Something else almost as good: guilt-free.
Lynn Martinez: "The food is made especially for babies, toddlers and kids through age 12."
