Parent to Parent: Giving back

WSVN -- Sisters Alexa and Kayla Ferra enjoy spending time together in the kitchen.

Alexa ferra: "Ever since I can remember we would always bake for special occasions like birthdays and holidays."

Then other people started enjoying their creative confections.

Alexa Ferra: "We decided hey, everyone likes our cupcakes, our food, why don't we take this to the next level."

So the sisters started selling their goods and created their own blog.

Alexa Ferra: "Cupcakesistersmiami.com is pretty much documenting our cupcake adventures and all things cupcakes."

But for them, it's not only about making money, it's about giving back. That's why they came to the ronald Mcdonald House at Jackson Memorial Hospital to make dessert for the families staying there and they're not alone.

These college kids offered to make a delicious dinner.

Kerri Riva: "I made chicken cordon bleu, green bean casserole. Kristi made rice and salad, it should be really delicious, I'm excited about it."

7s parenting expert Dr. Valerie Goode says what these kids are doing is natural because most kids really do want to help others.

Kerri Riva: "If you ask an elementary classroom who wants to help the teacher, you get almost 100 percent of those children raising their hands they all want to help."

Dr. Val says the key is to tap into that desire to help without pushing your child too far. Allow them to help at their own level.

Dr. Val: "And encourage that, and say how wonderful it is, even if it's not perfect. Don't give them a better way of doing it."

Saundra Jackson and her daughter are staying at the Ronald Mcdonald House because Ashanti had a liver transplant earlier this year. They say what these kids are doing is inspiring.

Saundra Jackson: "There are some families here that are not quite as blessed, so if they don't have to go out and buy food, they may not be able to afford it."

And for one night the families staying here get to put troubles aside and enjoy a good meal

Alexa Ferra: "You're so lucky and so fortunate to be able to get all the opportunities you have so any chance that you have to give back and help someone out or make someone smile I think it's really important."
