Parent to Parent: TEKNO 101
Going away to college can be a stressful time for families when it comes to hauling all that stuff to school! 7's Lynn Martinez shows us how a new web site is making that process a little easier in tonight's Parent to Parent.
WSVN -- From basketball to cheerleading to homecoming court, Gabby Alfieri has had a great high school experience, but now it's time for the next chapter.
Gabby Alfieri: "It's really weird. I don't feel I'm old enough to go away to college, but it's exciting."
The 17-year-old is looking forward to being on her own for the first time, but her parents admit it's one of their biggest concerns.
Louis Alfieri, Father: "Because it's the first time she's ever moved out, then transporting all the stuff she's going to take with her."
Then they found a new website called tekno101.com. It's made just for college students!
Michael Taylor, Tekno 101: "You can go straight to this site and buy everything you need for college."
Michael Taylor created the website to make that move to college a little easier on families.
Michael Taylor: "Everything is drop and shipped to the university in a crate with your name on it, and in the summertime we store everything nationwide."
Students can purchase furniture, linens, even computers for college. Then instead of loading up the car, the company ships the items directly to the university eventually ending up right in their dorm room.
Michael Taylor: "It's very cost effective, it eliminates you driving back and forth from school."
Gabby's dad is happy she won't be hauling everything back home for the summer.
Louis Alfieri: "They'll actually take your furniture when you're coming home for summertime, and repack it and keep it in storage."
Another cost-saving feature you can rent your textbooks.
Gabby Alfieri: "Books are like $200 and then you have to pay for them and then you don't have to use them anymore after you're done with the class."
Gabby likes the site has its own social networking component, allowing her to talk to other students in her field.
Gabby Alfieri: "If I have a question for nursing class or something I'm sure someone out there will be able to help me, so I think that's cool too."
There's even a travel section with discount prices.
Michael Taylor: "You can buy your tickets, your cruise for spring break, you're going back home for the holidays."
Michael calls tekno-101 a one stop shop for kids going away to college, and families agree it's making this exciting time a little less chaotic.
Louis Alfieri: "It's less stressful for us as parents, especially for my daughter that she's taken care of."
The site also insures all your student's belongings for a minimal fee.
