Parent to Parent: Tutoring Program
The lazy days of summer are a mere memory as students are back to test taking and homework. Whether it's reading or math, 7's Lynn Martinez shows us how a program is helping kids get organized in today's Parent to Parent.
WSVN -- Tutor: "If we don't have an E at the end what do we have? Kit."
This looks more like a fun word game than hard work.
Tutor: "So what sound does this letter make?"
But it's all a part of interactive learning - the concept behind One on One Tutoring.
Marcel Monnar: "Our goal is to increase student achievement and help them become independent learners."
This tutoring program for students kindergarten through 12th grade identifies which areas students need help with then creates a program specific to them.
Marcel Monnar: Whether it's homework help or learning to read or learning study skills or independent learning skills."
Their mission - to help kids get ahead. Seven-year-old Mia and 5-year-old Sebastian are young now but will soon face a lot more homework. That's why their mom wants them prepared now.
Claryza Pujol: "In the next year or so they're going to be more independent and the teachers are going to be counting on them to be responsible for their own agendas."
She enrolled both of them in this tutoring program last year and says it helped her son's reading and vocabulary.
Claryza Pujol: "It was so ingrained in him what he actually learned here and he associates particular words with being here."
Another important lesson students learn here - organizational skills.
Marcel Monnar: "What we try and do is organize their daily assignments."
If your child's backpack is a disorganized disaster, their school work could suffer.
Tutor: "So how would you organize your binder?"
The tutors here teach kids how to properly label folders, organize binders and even keep a calendar so students are ready for that dreaded pop quiz!
Tutor: "Anytime any test comes up, any project comes up, I want you to schedule it on the calendar."
So with a little extra effort, your "A" student will be the apple of every teacher's eye!
Marcel Monnar: "So they're practicing it and practice makes perfect."
Lynn Martinez: "One on One Tutoring is offered at home in school or as an online program."
