Nine million children in this country are considered obese. It's becoming a huge national problem. One local school is trying to help kids slim down and boost grades. Seven's Lynn Martinez has details in tonight's Parent to Parent.
WSVN -- Coach Shelton Smith knows how to get his students up and at 'em. The coach has seen more and more overweight students in his classes.
Chelsea Henderson: "I knew that I had to do something for kids to help save their lives and to get them healthy."
So he designed this class called EDU-FITT, he wanted to work the students bodies and brains.
Chelsea Henderson: "What I've done was I infused education and fitness together, so that kids-- they can learn, and we are decreasing childhood obesity and increasing student achievement.
Each exercise in the Deerfield Park Elementary class is designed to be educational while it works the muscles.
The kids play math, science and reading games, and while they're thinking, they never stop moving.
Chelsea Henderson: "Even though you exercise, besides exercise, you learn math, reading and many different subjects, and the fitness program is so much fun."
And it's working.
Josh Morgan: "In the program I lost 30 pounds by running, helping myself doing push-ups."
Kids also learn about changing what they put into their body.
Anthony Alejandre: "I used to eat hamburgers everyday and like two packs of fries everyday. Now I eat fruit salad, vegetables."
Coach Smith says the hard work in class is also paying off at home.
Coach Smith: "They do go home, and they try to educate the parents regarding some the food they might have in the house, and the parents are listening."
It all comes down to making the right choices, and in EDU-FITT, Coach Smith says his students get an A+.
