Protecting Your Pet: Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is becoming just as popular among pets as people. In today's Protecting Your Pet, Marilyn Mitzel show us how its being used to help animals walk again.
WSVN--One step at a time is getting Bear back on track. He was paralyzed following routine surgery that went terribly wrong.
Bear's Owner Miguel Michelena:"Apparently right after the procedure he went into some sort of shock."
The vets *only* advice - put bear to sleep.
Miguel:"There was no way we were going to put him down. It was never an option."
Exploring other options Miguel discovered the animal health and rehab center in South Miami.
Dr. Marta Sanchez Of Animal Health & Rehab Center:"The underwater therapy was designed for racing horses before it was found that it will help small animals dogs and cats"
As you can imagine - many animals don't take naturally to the water.
Some are just 'scaredy cats'.
Dr. Sanchez:"Initially they don't want to go in it's a process to make them understand that it's alright nothing bad will happen. They're confused whether to walk or swim."
It's great following knee or hip surgery. Treating and easing arthritis pain. Plus overcoming paralysis.
Dr. Sanchez:"Forward like that"
Water therapy is just one technique used to regain mobility....
While physical therapy for animals is expensive - realizing the tremendous benefits - some pet insurers now pay for it.
Pretty impressive... Considering all these animals were never expected to walk again.
Dr. Sanchez:"We can almost always do something - over 50percent can be helped."
Miguel:"It's great. He's back to the way he used to be."
Back on dry land - bear is doing what he was born to do naturally.
