All Room for Improvement

When you live in South Florida, patios can work like a second living room. For most of us, they're a place to party and play all year long. But in tonight's room for improvement, our makeover maestro Martin Amado is showing us how anybody can turn a regular patio into the perfect patio.

WSVN -- Well, winter is officially over, not that we notice a difference given our great South Florida weather, but hey, now more than ever, it's time to enjoy the outdoors. So on today's Room For Improvement, we're working on a patio a makeover just in time to fire up the barbecue!.

Martin: "Room for improvement. Hello, how are you? Let's see that Patio."

Martin: "So this is your patio. I feel like I'm up in the treetops. I love the view.

Homeowner: "We do a great deal of entertaining. Do 4th of July, Memorial day. Christmas. But right now it's very bland and blah."

Martin: "Well you go off and relax, and I'm going to get to work so I can get this all done in one day."

Martin: "Two things the patio has going for it is that the space is fairly large and we have furniture to work with. It just needs a design direction to pull it all together! I'm thinking Mexican Fiesta!"

Martin: "The first thing we're going to tackle is the mix-match furniture, an easy solution to make all the chairs work together is just to get matching cushions! Dresses them up!"

Martin: "The fix for this dining table is to actually reupholster the seats with outdoor fabric. That way we update the look and unify the two areas with the same matching red color."

Martin: "For $11 dollars you have a brand new patio set."

Martin: "An outdoor area rug helps to define the main dining set even more. Plus it helps to break up some of this hunter green color on the wood deck as well."

Martin's Magic

Sounds of nature, especially water, can be very peaceful in a patio, so I'm turning this $40 fire pit into a fountain.

Martin: "So the first thing I'm going to do is place these pavers inside the pit."

Martin: "I'm putting the grill right on top. On top of this I'm just going to lay some chicken wire."

Martin: "So when it's all complete, for around $70 dollars you have a unique water feature."

Tool Tip

"Candles always provide great ambiance when used outdoors, but they aren't too practical if the wind comes along, a solution just place a hurricane glass over the candle!"

Martin: "Chimes offer relaxing and soothing sounds and a patio is a perfect place to enjoy them! And with this final touch the patio is now complete."

Martin: "This morning, the patio was uninviting and your eye went straight to the hunter green of the floors, but by bringing in other colors through cushions and accessories, the patio now becomes an extension of their indoor living space for less than $1,100."

Martin: "One Two Three. Open your eyes."

Homeowner: "Oh my Gosh. Wow holy smokes, it's fabulous -- oh my gosh look at this. I cannot believe this is the same space, I cannot believe. Oh my Gosh.

Martin: "Patios will be used a lot this spring and summer, and really year-round, so apply the same principles of decorating indoors, outdoors as well. I'll see you guys next week."
