Room for Improvement: Mother's Day Surprise
For some, it's breakfast in bed. For others, it's a bouquet of flowers. If you're looking to make mother's day special, one local man may have us all beat. He's convinced our makeover maestro to makeover his mother's backyard. Here's Martin Amado with the results in tonight's "Room for Improvement."
WSVN -- We're turning our attention outdoors once again and making a nice back yard look even better. It's all about attention to details, I tell you. Best of all, it's a makeover surprise for a very special Mom on today's Room for Improvement.
Martin: " Room for Improvement."
George: "Hey Martin."
Martin: "George nice to meet you. Everything's hush hush with your mom?"
George: "Yah top secret."
Martin: "Let's go see the back yard."
Martin: "Why did you want to choose this space to surprise your mom? Well-we spend a lot of time here, on the weekends especially my parents like to do BBQ's here on Sundays. And since mother's Day is fast approaching we figured we would surprise her by doing the whole back yard."
Martin: "George's mom has done a great job landscaping the backyard, but the unattractive concrete slab is taking away from her all her work! It needs some sprucing up!"
You don't have to live with white ugly concrete floor like this anymore. If you don't have the budget right now to lay down tiles or possibly just stamp the concrete-not a problem. apply a concrete stain does wonders and it comes in many colors and you can match it to any décor!
Martin: "Step two is I am adding a second color around the border to give it an area rug feel."
Martin: "This teak furniture has weathered and seen better days, so I am actually going to treat it with a stain that has a polyurethane protection already in it."
Martin: "Old and new."
Martin: "I am turning this urn planter into an end table by placing vinyl bumpers to the rim and then I putting my piece of glass right on top."
Martin: "Do you know what this is? A cast iron doormat, but I'm actually turning it into a cast-iron grate and using it as wall décor!"
Martin: "One table down, another one to go."
Martin: "Final touch -- a nice pitcher of cool lemonade to enjoy the patio, and we are officially done!"
Martin: "This morning the patio had great furniture to work with, but the white concrete slab, you should remember was really taking away from its potential. We added some cushions and accessories and we can't forget about the paint. And now this whole tropical backyard came together to under...believe it or not -- $500"
Martin: "One, two, three -- open your eyes."
George and his mother: "GASP wow its beautiful."
Martin: "Well now you have a beautiful patio to enjoy guys. Don't cry. Don't cry.
Mom: "It's beautiful."
All right guys enjoy it. Lesson of the day, you're very welcome, you don't have to live with white concrete floors any longer, use your creativity and turn an eye soar into eye candy! The season is perfect for outdoor projects and entertaining! To all the moms out there, Happy Mother's Day. See you next week!
