All Room for Improvement

Now that the holidays are just about here, many of us will be spending every free moment cooking in the kitchen. But if your decor is leaving a bad taste in your mouth, maybe it's time for a change. Tonight, our makeover maestro is whipping up a feast for the eyes. Here's Martin Amado with "Room for Improvement."

WSVN -- It's a decorating emergency on room for improvement as we give a bland kitchen a kick of flavor, spicing things up a bit. The recipe calls for a gallon of paint, a bit of furniture and a dash of accessories. let's go create a feast for the eyes, shall we?

Martin: "Room for Improvement to the rescue. Hi Doris, It's nice to meet you. So this is the space huh?"

Martin: "Thank you for the opportunity to make over your kitchen."

Doris: "I am very excited I can't wait."

Martin: "So, tell me a little bit about the space."

Doris: "It's coming to the end of my career. I am a police sergeant with Miami-Dade Police and I want to be able to be comfortable and it to be cozy and I picked some pieces in here, but I just don't have what it takes to do the finishing touches."

Martin: "You will be off to work in a little bit, but you are going to give us access to the house and when you come back, I promise you, you are going to have a beautiful kitchen. At least I hope. You are not going to arrest me if you don't like it right?"

Doris: "No."

Martin: "The homeowner is gone, but before we get snacking, I need to shop, so let's get to it."

Martin: "OK. The shopping is done, I hope she likes the items and doesn't consider it a crime in her book."

Martin: "First of all, we need color. The walls are screaming for color."

Martin: "Here is a great tip that can save you money when buying paint. If you are not committed to a color, first try going to the oops section at your local home improvement store. What would normally cost $20 dollars costs $5.00. So we are literally painting the entire space for only five dollars."

Martin: "If you are wondering how I chose this color, especially when you are working in a kitchen space, take a look at your countertops. Take a look at the color embedded within and that will sort of give you a hint in terms of what to paint the walls."

Martin: "The painting is done, big difference huh, but we are not done yet. Let's move on to the accessories and the furniture."

Martin: "We have to get rid of this table. It's too big and it's not centered on the light fixture."

Martin: "Who says you can't get a workout while decorating huh? It's time for the furniture."

Martin: "Here is a great idea if you have a kitchen with limited space and you still want to create a cozy Breakfast nook. Bistro set's are perfect.

Martin: "In this case it's actually an outdoor set, all three pieces were $100 dollars. You can't beat it."

Martin: "We are adding accessories to the top of the cabinet to give it personality."

Martin: "A lot of time people keep the tops of cabinets empty, because they don't know what to do. Here is a tip: simple planter, for $1.25. A simple dinner plate on an easel from the dollar store for visual impact."

Martin: "Here is another tip, as opposed to just spreading everything out across, grope them in clusters, minimum of threes and vary the heights."

Martin: "Live plants always give a finished touch in any decorated space. But by any chance if you don't have a green thumb. Home Improvement stores have a one year guarantee."

Martin: "Here is your design tip of the day. Take simple tiles from your local home improvement store, buy some cork pads, put them in the corners and voila, you have instant coasters for your wine glasses or mugs. If you don't want to use them as coasters, use them as candle holders especially for the holidays."

Martin: "I think we have accomplished this makeover in one day."

Martin: "I hope the homeowner likes it cause we have done this complete makeover believe it or not, in under 500 dollars so I hope she is happy with it and that she does not take it to jail Let's wait for her reaction."

Martin: "Ok at the count of three open your eyes one, two, three."

Doris: "Wow, it's beautiful."

Martin: "You wanted a cozier kitchen that reflected your personality, you are a vivacious person and a very energetic and have a lot of color in your living room and before you kitchen lacked that so I think now the two really tie in together."

Martin: "You are not taking me to jail."

Doris: "No, No, you are free, you did a fabulous job."

Martin: "It's a great space and I truly hope you enjoy it."
