Room for Improvement: Living Room

Archived Reports:

All Room for Improvement

For most families, the focal point of the house is the living room. But it's easy to lose that special feeling if you're not using your space correctly. In tonight's Room for Improvement, Martin Amado shows us if you want to make major changes, you don't have to spend a lot of money.

WSVN--When you enter a home the living room is usually the first space you see, so you want it to look attractive and confortable not only for you but your guests, and that's today's room for improvement."

Martin: "What it is about the space that you are not happy at the moment?

Jamie: "I would like the space to be more inviting."

Martin: "You were a bit skeptical at the very beginning right?"

Jamie: "Very much so."

Martin: "In terms of making this happen in one day? So we are gonna prove you wrong today."

So for those of you wondering this is all the shopping that takes place to make it all happen in one day.

Design Direction:

The two main problems with this living room are first of all the bay window is not being featured because of this nasty verticals and of course this sectional is creating a wall blocking the view of the piano. So the solution is to go ahead and re-arrange the entire furniture layout and of course replace the vertical with some beautiful window treatments.

Now we can really see the shape of the bay window and it becomes a beautiful focal point in the space.

Now it's time to tackle problem number two which means moving that entertainment center over that side of the room thus improving the traffic flow into the living space.

Tool Tip:

An oversize leather ottoman such as this is a great alternative as a coffee table, if you have small children because there is no sharp corners.

Martin's Magic:

Now just to make the ottoman a bit more practical as a coffee table, I am taking a regular frame mirror for the wall and using it as a serving tray.

If you are displaying a beautiful collection of maybe family photos and keepsakes try elevating some on easels, makes it a bit more special and adds visual interest to the entire arrangement.

Final touch a decorative plate for this color on this side of the room and we're done.

This morning the room lacked any decorative touches and the traffic flow was kind of akward. But after some re-arranging new accent pieces and window treatments we've created a beautiful setting for family and friends to gather.

Martin: "One, two, three..."

Jamie: "Holy Mackrel! you rock! It is more than awesome, I got tears in my eyes! This far exceeded any expectation I had."

Well I think we made a believer out of Jamie it does happen in one day and of course she has a great space to entertain and a beautiful room at first glance. I will see you guys next week.
