All Room for Improvement

It is a dilemma for many homeowners. How to get friends and family to wind down in an upscale room. Well in tonight's Room For Improvement, Martin Amado shows us you can create a space that's both comfortable and fashionable.

WSVN--A living room tends to be a bit more formal, while a family room has a more casual setting but the doesn't mean the space can't be stylish as well. That's the mission of today's room for improvement.

Martin: "Is this a recent addition to the house?"

Carlos: "It's recently go through a transformation a whole remodeling. But it still lacks that homey feeling where you want to spend you time in here.

We have a very dark and heavy color not only on the couch but on the entertainment center so the idea is to go opposite all the accessories and soften the entire look of the room. We are going to go that through toss pillows, an area rug and of course window treatments.

Cheap Fix:

First, let's dress up the windows. The problem I have is doorway itself is 145 inches. Off the shelve rods usually only come up to 120 so a cheap fix is to buy two and adapt them and save some money.

Two rods, we are turning them into one.

If you have a large grouping of furniture, it really deserves a large area rug so don't skimp on that.

We have an 8 by 10 which is the perfect size.

Design Direction:

So in a family room, you're not only watching tv but the kids could be doing their homework. At the moment, the desk doesn't look very attractive. By placing it behind the sofa, we are going to turn it into a sofa table, a writing desk and it's going to integrate much better with the room's decor.

Plastic frames out the door.

Martin's Magic:

Two upholstered benches placed side by side create an awesome coffee table plus extra storage for all the family photo albums too.

The final touch is just to place some photos on the desk and a simple thing like placing some on easels gives it more visual interest.

This morning we took a family room that was a work in progress and we completed the transformation with all the decortive accessories that gave it a causal yet elegant home setting all for a budget of under $900.

Magic: "In the count of three you can open your eyes."

"WOW! It's awesome. The rest of it will be the hang out room for the boys and myself to watch football games on the big screen."

In one day we achieved the prefect balance between comfort and style for every member of the family to enjoy. I'll see you guys next week.
