Room for Improvement: Thanksgiving Dining Room
All this month, we have been making decorating dreams come true. But in tonight's Room For Improvement, a Habitat for Humanity homeowner has a special wish for Thanksgiving. She wants Martin Amado to make it a memorable holiday by designing her dining room.
WSVN -- With a lot of courage, Katrina Smith has changed her life. After leaving an abusive relationship, she's finally living the American dream -- thanks to Habitat for Humanity.
Katrina Smith: "We have peace now. I don't have to be afraid. I don't have to be scared when I come home. I can be at peace."
Katrina can also have peace of mind knowing she won't have to furnish her entire home on her own. Two weeks ago, Belkys Nerey surprised her at a luncheon with a free makeover.
Belkys: "As we know, Habitat is not just about building homes. It's about building futures. On behalf of WSVN Channel 7, Martin Amado is going to come to your house and give you a Room For Improvement."
Martin: "Hey, Katrina. Congrats on your new home. Let's go see the space."
Katrina: "OK, Martin. This is my space. This is the dining room table that was given to me."
Martin: "What would you like the dining room ultimately to look like?"
Katrina: "Nice harvest colors. Just something warm and cozy for me and the kids to enjoy."
Martin: "Now you have a house, but, in the end, you're going to have a home."
The challenge with the dining room right now is that it's open to the kitchen, so we have to keep both spaces in mind with the overall design plan. We have a functional table, but of course it's not decorative. So, we are going to replace this. But let's first up add some paint on the walls."
So, I want the wall color to compliment the deep, jewel tones that Katrina loves so much, which I will also be using in the accent pieces. Of course the white doesn't work. The main color will be this light cream, and one accent wall will be this deep gold.
Martin: "Of course, to make it happen in one day we enlisted the help of America's Total Home Improvement and Ricardo. Thank you so much for helping us out."
Ricardo: "It's always a pleasure working with you."
Martin: "OK, here's the plan. I know we are doing the dining room, but since the kitchen is open, what do you think about doing both spaces for her?"
Ricardo: "I think it's a bright idea."
Martin: "Let's go to work."
So, now we have a beautiful contrast between the two colors tying the kitchen space with the dining area. Let's move on to our second challenge -- the light fixture. It can make or break a dining space. The ceiling fan isn't doing anything for the room. So let's replace it with something better.
Now the new light fixture defines the dining room.
Right next to the dining area is the laundry area, and, of course, it's not the most attractive thing to look at. But some curtain panels will solve the problem.
Thanks to El Dorado, we got Katrina a brand new dining set.
Katrina's a single mom with two children, so this table is the prefect size not only for her family but also for the dining space. For bigger gatherings, she can just put the drop leaf in and have a bigger table.
It's looking pretty. Let's set the table.
Turkey Day Tip:
So, if you want to set a nice Thanksgiving table, here are some tips: Aside from using a fragrant candle, go ahead and sprinkle some potpourri around the base, and it adds some really nice texture and aroma.
Also, for napkin rings you can go ahead and use these small grapevine wreaths that are only 20 cents at an arts and crafts store. Another option is to use a ribbon. It adds a really nice touch.
We are almost done, but not before we spruce up the kitchen, because it's looking kind of bland in comparison. This is the bonus room for Katrina.
I found this collection of glazed terra-cotta pots at Lowe's in the garden section, and this is exactly what I'm going to use to decorate the top of Katrina's cabinets and give it a pop of color.
This wall art expresses how Katrina feels about her new home.
So, now that we have a beautiful dining room, we can enjoy a delicious meal as the final touch donated by the folks at Publix. Let's hope Katrina likes it.
Martin: "So, here we have Katrina, Nicholas and Jordan. At the count of three ... Are you nervous?
Nicholas: "I'm hungry."
Jordan: "I'm hungry."
Martin: "One, two, three."
Katrina: "I love it. This is so nice."
Martin: "Not only have we been decorating for you, we have been cooking, too."
Katrina: "It's real. Ohhh, we got food!"
Martin: "We have an extra surprise for you, as well, from Publix. They were kind enough to donate a $100 gift card. So you guys can go shopping for more food and have many memorable family meals around your new dining room table. So, enjoy and Happy Thanksgiving to all the viewers, of course, of Room For Improvement and Channel 7 News, and we'll see you guys next week.
Katrina and family: "Thank you, Channel 7."
