All Room for Improvement

The holidays are here, and you might be expecting some guests to sleep over your home. Tonight, our makeover maestro helps one woman turn a room into the perfect guest getaway.

WSVN -- Martin Amado: "With family and friends visiting now during the holidays, you want your home to look its very best, especially the guest bedroom right? So that's the goal on today's Room for Improvement."

Martin Amado: "Room for Improvement, good morning, Maria. How are you? Good to see you again."

Maria: "Likewise."

Martin Amado: "Ready for today?"

Maria: "Come on in."

Maria: "Martin, this is the bedroom."

Martin Amado: "Wow, mattress and that's it."

Maria: "Very bare bedroom."

Martin Amado: "I can see that. What do you envision at the end for this space?"

Maria: "Well, this is the guest bedroom and especially now, with the holidays, I just want a nice warm space."

Martin Amado: "So, take a look around. The room is uninviting and not very functional. We need a headboard, nightstands, and some other decorative pieces to turn this space into a relaxing retreat, and I'm thinking a subtle nautical theme is the perfect style. Let's get to work."

Martin Amado: "I wanted a contemporary headboard for Maria's bedroom, but, because I'm dealing with a full size bed, I had limited options."

SMALL WONDER

Now, by looking at the kids' department at the furniture store, who would have thought? I actually found the right one.

Martin Amado: "I'm not sure if this happens to you, but sometimes with a comforter or even a duvet cover it tends to get a little bit hot in the middle of the night, so the perfect compromise is to use a quilt."

Martin Amado: These coastal prints conjure up images of being away on a relaxing vacation, so they are perfect in a guest bedroom."

CHEAP FIX

You don't have to spend a lot of money furnishing a guest bedroom. In this case, we are using an end table and a tray table as nightstands.

Martin Amado: "Breakfast in bed anyone?"

MARTIN'S MAGIC

I love the woven texture of these place mats, so I decided to turn them into wall art.

Martin Amado: "Sea shells inside these candles remind us of being near the beach too."

Martin Amado: "The finishing touch is a trunk here at the foot of the bed where guests can sit down. They have additional storage inside, plus a convenient place to put down their luggage. We're done."

Martin Amado: "This morning we started with a blank canvas, we now have a beautiful and serene space that reminds us of a coastal lifestyle for under $1,000."

Martin Amado: "At the count of three. One, two, two and a half, three, open your eyes."

Maria: "Oh, my gosh, it's beautiful."

Martin Amado: "So, all the little touches for your family and friends when they come and visit. Well, thank you so much, enjoy it. To all the viewers out there, this is another Room for Improvement, and we'll see you next time."
