Room for Improvement: Teachers Lounge
We're celebrating Teachers Appreciation Month because after all, they are like second mothers. Tonight, our makeover maestro Martin Amado is stopping at a West Dade School, and, with donations from IKEA, he's turning a teachers break room into a lovely lounge.
WSVN -- Martin Amado: "Today, we have a very special Room for Improvement. We're here at Royal Palm Elementary to transform a typical teachers lounge into a more contemporary space, all in honor of Teachers Appreciation Month. Let's go look at the room."
Martin Amado: "Here we have Mrs. Driggs. She's the principal at Royal Palm Elementary and Ana Maria was one of the counselors that wrote into Channel Seven to make this happen today. And what do you guys envision for the space?
Ana Maria: "Well, I thought it would be really cool for you to come here and redo our teachers lounge."
Mrs. Driggs: "This is exactly what I envisioned to have upon my retirement. This is going to be my legacy to my teachers."
Martin Amado: "All right, so we're going to surprise you, Mrs. Driggs, at the end, and, of course, all the teachers as well, and is it OK if I take Ana Maria shopping with me today?"
Mrs. Driggs: "Of course."
Martin Amado: "Let's go, Ana Maria."
Martin Amado: "Now, I'm going to give you a sneak peak at the furniture, but you have to promise me you won't tell the rest of the teachers."
Martin Amado: "So we have some extra hands today helping me with the transformation, and especially the painting. This is Tom, the P.E. coach at the school."
DESIGN DIRECTION:
So here's the deal, I want to move the vending machines to this side of the room because right now when you walk into the teachers lounge I don't want to see this. It's not very attractive."
Martin Amado: "All right, kitchen area is done. Let's move on to the sitting area."
Martin Amado: "So we took a regular cork board, we painted it, and now it looks like a pop of color on this wall."
Martin Amado: "You can just fluff them up, and it looks brand new again. So, that's the whole purpose of having down inserts."
Martin Amado: "Nice."
Martin Amado: "Let's bring in the dinning tables, and I think we're almost there."
Martin Amado: "Now we just need chairs."
Martin Amado: "What I love about this bookcase is that it can actually go vertical or horizontal, so we just made it horizontal by attaching some legs on the bottom."
Martin Amado: "OK, coach, the final touch are some goodies for the teachers to actually enjoy for the first time in their new teachers lounge."
Coach Tom: "Thank you very much."
Martin Amado: "When we first saw the teachers lounge, it appeared cluttered and dated, but by changing the room's layout and replacing the mismatched furniture with new pieces, we now have a modern and stylish space for all the teachers to enjoy."
Martin Amado: "One, two, three, you guys like it? Go ahead and enjoy. Thank you to coach Tom, and, of course, Ana Maria for contacting us, and thank you, IKEA, for making it possible. We'll see you next time on another Room for Improvement."
