Room for Improvement: His House
A lobby can set the tone for a visit, especially if it happens to be in a children's home where it's important to make families feel comfortable. Tonight, on a special edition of Room For Improvement, makeover master Martin Amado works his magic at a place many at-risk kids in South Florida call home.
Martin Amado: "For over 20 years, His House Children's Home has provided help and hope to hundreds of children and their families, and on today's Room for Improvement, we're saying thank you by giving their lobby a complete makeover."
Founded by Jean Caceres-Gonzalez in 1989, His House provides a safe haven for at risk kids. The lobby is the first place people see here.
Martin Amado: "Tell me about your lobby space"
Jean: "It needs big help."
Martin Amado: "I can see that!"
Jean: "It is dirty and worn and needs some color."
Martin Amado: "So, I have a long day ahead of me, let me get to work and we'll surprise you and your staff at the end."
Jean: "We'l we're excited."
Martin Amado: "Thank you Jean."
Martin Amado: "Wow guys, take a look, what a difference already, huh? While I was doing the shopping at City Furniture we had the walls painted in these beautiful colors and we said goodbye to the vinyl floors and in it's place we have brand new carpet- I love it. All that's left to do now is replace the old furniture with the new."
Martin Amado: "Don't try this at home, but we bought so much furniture that we needed two trucks to make it all happen."
Martin Amado: "So, instead of the trunk we have an actual coffee table."
Martin Amado: "So, if you notice we have a lot more seating here in the lobby which is what they wanted. And because we're dealing with a high traffic area I kept two things in mind because of the design. I kept the furniture dark so that it's durable and second we don't have any wood surfaces that can easily scratch."
Martin Amado: "The lobby has eight of these frames but they don't fit in with the new design. The whitewash finish is a bit dated- so an easy fix is to use some spray paint."
Martin Amado: "Another challenge with this space is the large reception window that's being covered with these curtains- and between you and I- it doesn't look that great- so a creative solution is to hang these frames instead and float them right in the very center."
Martin Amado: "Before the hallway was just a pass through, but by placing two chairs and a small table, it becomes more functional."
Martin Amado: "All right, the last letter, we're done."
Martin Amado: "Before, the lobby showed the wear and tear of years of use but now thanks to ABC Carpet Mill Outlet, Lowes, and of course, City Furniture we have a space that comes together to reflect all the happiness His House brings to Children"
Martin Amado: "Go ahead and open your eyes."
Jean: "Oh My Gosh it is spectacular!"
Martin Amado: "Do you like it?"
Jean: "Look at that! It's night and day. Thank you so much for all the awesome work you do with the children and we thank you for watching as well and we'll see you next time on another."
All: "Room for Improvement!"
