Room for Improvement: Summer Design
Sometimes we get bored of seeing the same style, colors and decorations in a home. So, tonight, our makeover maestro Martin Amado is helping one woman update her living room with a few simple tricks.
WSVN -- Martin Amado: "The perfect time to change your home decor, especially if your a bit bord with it, is with the changing of the seasons. So, on today's Room for Improvement, we are giving a traditional living room more of a coastal beach style just in time for summer."
Martin Amado: "OK, Carmen, for all the viewers that don't know this, we actually featured you on Room for Improvement last year and gave your living room more of a traditional style using earth colors that you see right here, but I understand you want to change the look up a bit now for summer.
Carmen: "Correct."
Martin Amado: "What color scheme do you envision for the space now?"
Carmen: "I like beach colors."
Martin Amado: "To capture the summer feel in your home decor, you want to add as many natural textures as possible, colors that remind us of being near the ocean, such as pale blues, sea shells whatnot."
Martin Amado: "So let's begin with a new area rug."
Martin Amado: "By using a natural fiber such as a jute or a sisal, it already helps to bring the outdoor in."
Martin Amado: "I swapped out the love seat with these two accent chairs that Carmen had in the family room. Helps to give us another texture in the space, and it just feels more spacious already."
Martin Amado: "This pale blue, light and airy."
SMALL WONDER:
Distress finishes such as the one on this frame evokes a coastal style.
Martin Amado: "We went from elegant to casual with a new linen shade."
TOOL TIP:
I'm using the matching ottoman as our new coffee table, and then I found this basket while shopping, and I thought if we turn it upside down, we can actually use it as an accent table.
CHEAP FIX:
Here's a great inexpensive way to accessorize. Go down to the beach, pick up some sand and some seashells and display them in these clear vases. Of course, I bought these at the store just for the sake of time, but you get the idea.
Matin Amado: "This morning we found a nicely decorated living room in a traditional style, but by changing out the color scheme and the accessories and bringing in furniture from other rooms we gave it a brand new look for under $500."
Martin Amado: "One, two, three. Open your eyes."
Carmin: "Oh, beautiful."
Martin Amado: "So, you're happy?"
Carmin: "Very Happy."
Martin Amado: "Enjoy it. Have a good summer and stay cool. To all viewers, thank you so much for watching as well, and we'll see you next time on another Room for Improvement."
