Room for Improvement: Family Room
Decorating a room for mommy, daddy and three girls is a challenge. So tonight, our makeover maestro Martin Amado is here to show us how to design a room for the whole family.
WSVN -- Martin Amado: "Hey guys, on today's Room for Improvement, we are working on a family room that needs to serve many different functions for a family of five. So, lets go check out the space."
Martin Amado: "The homeowners have three daughters and use the room for arts and crafts, watching television and even laundry, but, as you can tell, the colors remind you of a kids play room. Storage is a big issue and the overall furniture layout needs some help."
Martin Amado: "The goal is to give this room a more sophisticated style, so the first thing that we did is get rid of all the bright colors. In its place we have a sage green that's more neutral, much better right, and now we can bring in the new furniture."
Martin Amado: "We're designing a room for all ages. So, I kept the sofa solid to please mom and dad, but we still brought in a fun patterns in the area rug to please the kids."
Martin Amado: "I love these chairs. They are super comfortable. Yeah, this is life."
Martin Amado: "So before, we had a sofa on this side of the room, and we had a small TV base, and the entire room felt disconnected. Now, we've created the essential seating arrangement. We have a brand new entertainment center and things are starting to improve, right. Lets keep working."
Martin Amado: "With three kids, the artwork can really pile up over the years. So, I have a good organizational system for the homeowner. We placed them in these individual file boxes."
Martin Amado: "One down one more to go."
Martin Amado: "Now, we just need a large coffee table."
Martin Amado: "Before we had two separate desks on the opposite side of the room, but by moving it over to this corner we have a larger work surface not only for studying, but also to do arts and crafts."
Martin Amado: "We're even using a file cabinet as a base and this way, we have additional storage."
Martin Amado: "Now, we have the perfect shelves to display all the kids artwork."
Martin Amado: "By placing two nails, instead of one in the very center it helps to distributes the weight evenly and prevents the frame from twisting."
Martin Amado: "Before this room was not being used to its full potential. The bright colors were overwhelming and the entire space lacked a sense of style. By dividing the room into three organized sections, we now have a space the whole family can enjoy."
Martin Amado: "And there you have it guys. I saw beyond all the clutter this morning and this is the final result. I'm super happy with it and I know the family loves it to. I'm Martin Amado and I'll see you next time on another Room for Improvement."
