Room for Improvement: Home Fashion
Changing the look of your home can be as simple as changing clothes, especially if you want a little makeover just in time for the holidays. Our makeover maestro, Martin Amado, is showing us how to dress up decorative accessories with basic wardrobe items. Let's see his home fashion tips on tonight's Room for Improvement.
WSVN -- Martin Amado: "If you want to give your home decor a brand new look, then ladies, look no further than your closet, because on today's Room for Improvement, I'm going to show you how you can take simple wardrobe items and turn them into decorative accessories for your home."
Martin Amado: "If you think about it, many trends in the home decor are influenced by the fashion runways, so it makes perfect sense that we can turn belts, leg warmers, scarves, even purses into unique decorative accessories for your home. Let's begin with the first project."
Martin Amado: "Furry pillows like this are quite expensive, but you can get the same look by making them out of leg warmers, especially now for the season, right? If you notice, it's the same shape as a neck roll pillow insert, so all you literally really need to do is stuff it right inside."
Martin Amado: "The fabric for the neck roll insert still shows on either side, but I can easily cover that by inserting a fabric napkin."
Martin Amado: "And the best part is, no sewing involved. Let's move on to the second project."
Martin Amado: "Here, we have a clutch purse, but if you open it up, it reminds me of a mini toss pillow. So the idea is to take some batting and stuff it right inside."
Martin Amado: "Now, this one is super easy. We are taking a trendy belt and placing it around a toss pillow to give it a lot more bling."
Martin Amado: "Let's see which one I want to use. I'll go for this one."
Martin Amado: "Now, this pillow looks like a million bucks."
Martin Amado: "Now, I'm going to show you three ways to dress up a lamp shade, beginning with a scarf."
Martin Amado: "So, I'm just going to tie it around the shade, create a knot in the center, and then dress it up with a brooch."
Martin Amado: "Another idea is to add a feather boa on the very bottom."
Martin Amado: "Now, they come in many different colors, and you can simply attach them using velcro strips."
Martin Amado: "And finally, the third option is to take a mini skirt like this one that comes in many different fabrics and dress up the lamp shade."
Martin Amado: "And there you go. Who would have thought, huh?"
Martin Amado: "Some other tips to play up the fashion theme: you can take a small handbag like this, and by placing a bud vase inside, you turn it into a beautiful flower holder."
Martin Amado: "And another tip is to take some bangles or bracelets and use them as a decorative vase around a candle."
Martin Amado: "By using wardrobe items that you have in your very own closet and combining it with a modern color scheme, we gave this living room, I would say, a Hollywood glam style that looks great. I hope you guys like it as well. Until next time, I'm Martin Amado for Room for Improvement."
And you can meet Martin tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. He will be hosting a decorating seminar at Casa Ideas inside Sunset Place in South Miami.
