Room for Improvement: Small Bedroom
Posted: 11/09/12
Small spaces are a design challenge, on tonight's Room for Improvement makeover maestro, Martin Amado, shows us decorating tricks to maximize your square footage.
Martin Amado: "When you have a small space, storage can always be an issue and that's exactly the challenge I'm faced with on today's Room for Improvement as I try to decorate a master bedroom. It needs organization and a sense of style."
Martin Amado: "This is the homeowner and tell me what you are not happy with your room right now?"
Viviana: "Well, my whole room is just bed."
Martin Amado: "Where is the bed? So, obviously its a big issue for you cause I understand you don't have enough any room for any additional furniture."
Viviana: "Nope. So we have no storage. We have our books all lined on the floor."
Martin Amado: "I'm basically going to work my magic and try to address all those issues for you today. So, I'm going to get to work and I'll surprise you at the end."
Martin Amado: "In a small bedroom a king size bed like this is not the best choice, but its already here. I need to make it work. So, the first step is to actually move the position of the bed underneath the window, so that it faces the TV."
Martin Amado: "I don't even know where to begin."
Martin Amado: I'm using to narrow book cases on either side of the bed, and by actually removing one of the shelves from here, I have more space to place my lamp and this can also double as my nightstand."
Martin Amado: "Notice that we took advantage of the vertical height of the room to gain more storage in this small space, and now to give it a more custom built in look. I'm installing a drapery rod all the way across and giving it a fabric back drop. Super elegant."
Martin Amado: "Wow. Now this looks really good, if I may say so myself."
Martin Amado: "I repurposed the bookcase that was here before and now its not only our media table that fits right under the TV, but it also acts as our dresser with the addition of these baskets."
Martin Amado: "Loose cables like this look unattractive in a space, so an easy fix is to use these cable staples to make everything look tidy."
Martin Amado: "Just hammer it into the baseboard."
Martin Amado: "Instead of traditional closet doors, curtains are a great way to add a bit more elegance in a space, plus you still have easy access to all the clothes."
Martin Amado: "Perfect, you can never have enough candles when you want to set the mood for romance. Let's go get Viviana and I hope she likes her new master bedroom."
Martin Amado: "This morning the king size bed was pretty much the main attraction in the bed room and not in a very good way. Now, with some furniture rearranging, creative uses for bookcases and new window treatments, Viviana's bedroom reflects the modern style that she loves."
Martin Amado: "Here we go. One, two, three. Go ahead and open your eyes."
Viviana: "Oh wow. This is my room. Wow. Oh, wow. I love it."
Martin Amado: "We still kept your king size bed so we made it work in the room by basically framing it with floating bookcases on either side. So are you happy with everything."
Viviana: "I love it."
Martin Amado: "Well, thank you so much for letting us do this for you. To you you guys at home, we thank you for watching and we'll see you next time on another Room for Improvement."
