Room for Improvement: Classroom
Making dreams come true is what we are doing tonight. Our makeover maestro, Martin Amado, is on a special decorating assignment. Let's watch as he helps create a space for girls to excel in school and the community.
WSVN -- Martin Amado: "Today's Room for Improvement actually takes us into a classroom at Lenora B. Smith Elementary School in Miami. We're helping the Embrace Girls Foundation, a special afterschool program that empowers little girls to be healthy, confident and ambitious leaders. Let's see the space and meet the founder.
Martin Amado: "And Velma Lawrence is the director of the special program. So tell me a little bit more of how it works."
Velma Lawrence: "We make sure that their homework is completed. We have the private tutorial sessions that they need as well as social skills. So we wanted to create a dream room for them."
Martin Amado: "What do you actually envision for the space for the girls?"
Velma Lawrence: "I really envision one part a learning center where we have a smart board and comfortable seating, and the other part more of a lounge."
Martin Amado: "First up, we already painted the entire classroom in these beautiful colors that are more cheerful to the eye. Second, we are now creating the lounge area that Velma wants, a place where the girls can socialize, hang out and read books."
Martin Amado: "Now, I know what you are thinking. You're seeing white and your freaking out because it's going to stain easily, but don't worry. That's why we have this fun cover for it."
Martin Amado: "These were only $15 each."
Martin Amado: "By using the bookcases as end caps here at the end of the sofa, we create a more custom, built-in look, plus we gain additional storage space.
Martin Amado: "We are in a classroom, which means the bulletin boards are completely functional, but if you notice, a bit on the plain side. That's all about to change, by using these peel-and-stick stickers right on it. Turning it into a decorative element in the room."
Martin Amado: "We can now concentrate on this side of the classroom, which is mainly for learning. It doesn't require much, just a few extra touches to look spectacular."
Martin Amado: "Hear that? It's solid concrete. That's means I'm going to have to use a drill bit and work even harder."
Martin Amado: "Before I began on this project, we had a typical classroom. Now, with new paint, new carpet and two separate areas for the girls to use after school, we have the perfect space for tutoring, homework and workshops where they can learn important social and life skills in a fun environment."
Velma Lawrence: "Oh my!" (cheers)
Martin Amado: "It's too hard to control everybody, but I think we got a good reaction."
Velma Lawrence: "This is more than I envisioned, Martin! This is beautiful!"
Martin Amado: "To all you guys at home, we thank you for watching, and we'll see you on another Room for Improvement."
