Room for Improvement: Guestroom
Archived Reports:
For many of us, living in south Florida carries the burden of serving as a vacation home to friends and family. But if you really want to impress your guests, you have to set the mood at home. Martin Amado shows us how in tonight's room for improvement.
WSVN--Martin: "Today's room for improvement is a small, outdated bedroom that we're turning in one day into a relaxing space that says, "home away from home," for your out of town guests."
Martin: "Room for improvement -- hello. Hi Erika nice to meet you nice to meet you too."
Martin: "Do you have lots of family that sleeps often?"
Erika: "Yes we do, often most of the time for Christmas, Thanksgiving."
Martin: "Any ideas for me?"
Erika: "Basically I want this room to feel very inviting."
Martin: "I usually work with your existing furniture but in this case the platform bed upstairs has gotta go. Its out with the old, in with the new and that includes new night stands and even a headboard."
Martin: "The builder's white that's been here for six years will be history."
Martin: "No more white. Yay!"
Design Direction:
In a small room you don't want to crowd the room with a lot of heavy furniture, so this wrought iron headboard is perfect because it's open and airy, yet still open and airy making the bed a focal point.
A glass tabletop nightstand is not only functional, but it also keeps a small bedroom looking spacious.
Martin's Magic:
This window is a bit insignificant for me so a great visual trick is to go ahead and extend the rod past the window frame and that way it's gonna make the wall much more dramatic.
This way it looks like the window is much larger but of course we know the truth.
Cheap Fix:
When guests come over they usually bring luggage and instead of putting them on the floor they can go ahead and put them on this bench just like a valet you'd find in a hotel room.
As a thoughtful expression of your hospitality think of adding a welcome basket for your guests filled with candles, cookies some lotions and spray and even a magazine, that way they have all the amenities within reach.
Before an outdated guest bedroom was not a very inviting place to stay overnight. But with a few new pieces and accesories, the room is now filled with warmth and every confort imaginable for under ????? Not bad considering we started with a complete overhaul of the space.
Martin: "Just think about what the bedroom looked like for you know 6 years. When i count to three. One, two three."
Erika: "Oh my gosh this is gorgeous."
Martin: "Wow. Oh my gosh martin this is beautiful. This is gorgeous."
Martin: "With the bedroom looking like that, i think the new challenge will be making your guests leave your home. You're gonna have to kick them out huh. I will see you next time."
